What's that in the lake? July 9, 2001 at approximately 2:15 p.m. I was a reporter/photographer for the local newspaper of record, The Peachland Signal, when I watched and snapped this photo of something strange breaking the surface of Okanagan Lake. I was familiar with the legend of Ogopogo, the creature purported by some to reside in the lake. I appeared silently and briefly, then submerged once again, like it was never there. Even to this day I'm not sure what I captured on my Nikon, but still I ask myself: What's that in the lake? An article I wrote, published in the Kelowna Capital News, telling the story of something strange I photographed rising from the depths of Okanagan Lake. written by Ross McDermott photo by Ross McDermott

The #illusive Ogopogo
rarely seen to rise
captured in its mystery
right before my eyes
zooming in for clarity
it surely can't be true
and yet it breaks the calm
of Okanagan blue.
