While the votes among the rest of our greedy nominees were incredibly tight, we have a clear #ProfiteerOfTheYear winner.
Why? Food prices in Canada increased 19.1% from 2018 to 2022, and in 2024, the number of Canadians accessing food banks hit a record high. While they profit, we pay the price.

Dave McKay CEO of RBC Royal Bank - RBC has poured $367 million dollars into fossil fuel projects since the 2016 Paris Agreement, including projects that threaten our planet and trample on Indigenous rights - Blatantly attempted a greenwashing campaign to generate good press and silenced Land Defenders at their AGM - Compensation package in 2023: $15.22 million
Our list would not be complete without our old pal Dave McKay, CEO of RBC. He has been profiting off massive fossil fuel investments and violations to Indigenous rights and sovereignty. #ProfiteerOfTheYear
Tony Staffieri CEO of Rogers Communications - Increased total company profit by 25% – while increasing bills for millions of Canadians through sneaky contract provisions and misleading fees - Led the company’s acquisition of Shaw, strengthening the monopoly that forces Canadians to pay some of the highest internet and cell phone bills in the world - Compensation package in 2022: $31.5 million
Of course we couldn’t leave out Tony Staffieri, CEO of Rogers. He has been under fire for sneakily increasing phone and internet bills for millions of Canadians. Did we also mention his role in monopolizing telecommunications in Canada? #ProfiteerOfTheYear
Michael J. Cooper CEO of Dream Unlimited - Mega landlord in Ontario currently under investigation for price fixing using U.S.-banned AI software to increase rent by 7% – 54% for thousands of tenants - Company engages in profiteering off housing, holding $25 billion in real estate assets - Compensation package in 2023: $5.6 million
How can we miss a mega landlord? Michael J. Cooper, the CEO of Dream Unlimited, made the list for fuelling the housing crisis through price fixing and making rent completely unaffordable for thousands of people. #ProfiteerOfTheYear
Firat H. Gezen President of General Dynamics and Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc. - Providing $83 million dollars worth of mortar cartridges to the Israeli military committing genocide in Gaza - Increased profits to $1.2 billion by producing and selling weapons and surveillance systems, and ammunitions for war - Compensation package in 2022: $3.3 million
We also have Firat H. Gezen, the President of General Dynamics and Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc., for profiting off the production of arms being used to commit genocide in Gaza. #ProfiteerOfTheYear
Richard Kruger CEO of Suncor - Proudly leads a Big Oil company that is responsible for nearly 35 million metric tons of climate pollution (equivalent to 8.3 million gas-powered cars driving for a year) - Suncor is a founding member of the Pathways Alliance — who are under investigation for their greenwashing lies - Compensation package in 2023: $36.8 million
Next, we have Richard Kruger, CEO of Suncor — one of the worst polluters in Canada. He is a greenwashing pioneer making millions during a climate emergency. #ProfiteerOfTheYear
GALEN WESTON JR. Chair of Loblaw Companies Ltd. - Posted an operating income of $1.091 billion (an 8.4% increase) as record numbers of Canadians are visiting food banks because of the affordability crisis - Was the target of an independent consumer boycott over inflated food costs and price-hiking before finally cooperating with federal regulation - Compensation package in 2022: $11.7 million * *Compensation includes role as head of the George Weston Ltd. holding company.
