Sunset At Punakaiki, I tried to time the shot so the wave was placed correctly on the right side. This was a challenge as the sandflies ( midge ) were particularly active and biting.

Photo of a coastline. Blue skies with wispy white closer, on the right a sandy beach on the distance going to a steeply-curved hill covered in subtropical plants. You can see swells on the calm Tasman Sea, with white caps as they roll closer to shot. In the mid-distance are stacks of rock (pancake rocks), and in the foreground are green spikes of New Zealand flax.

Pancake rocks are made when layers of sediment and mud turn into rock, and the layers erode at different rates. The layers are only a couple inches thick, and fairly regular in their thickness. In this photo, stacks of pancake rocks take up 2/3 of the image from the bottom of the photo up, where you can see the blue sea behind and to the right, greenery covering the ones back and to the left, in front of the distant coastline

Today was a good day. I can't get over how beautiful it is here.
