Can someone please write that #PuttiOfScience book, already? We do need it!
4 putti on a sandstone relief. Two operating a crane, Tow are in a boat, one is rowing another is drawing something. A relief at the Katharinenhof in Hamburg. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharinenhof_(Hamburg) CC BY-SA 3.0 Uwe Barghaan
Look, @rhiggitt.bsky.social , what I found: #PuttiOfPorts ! Can't believe they exist and literally round the corner from my apartment. Aren't they just fab! 😍
#PuttiOfScience
Splendid #puttiofscience at work
Not quite one of the #PuttiOfScience but certainly one of the many #PuttiOfLabour
Ping @rhiggitt.bsky.social
visited different library, found different cherubs!!
#puttiofscience
ok this one isn’t quite doing science but he’s carving the title onto a big stone block and looking at a caterpillar
Volume three title page
Closeup of the cherubs, examining a basket full of bugs of various sorts, plus a lobster
the second two volumes of the set!
#puttiofscience
Copperplate title page of Gottlieb Wilhelm’s 1796 Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte with some cherubs doing entomology
Closeup on the cherubs, one of whom is holding a collector’s net and looking over the shoulder of the second, who is illustrating a plate full of beetles. I think he might actually be engraving a copper printing plate but am less certain of that
found this at the perfect time, since I’m working through the rare stacks for some catalog maintenance
#puttiofscience
happy lil cherub holding a compass and surrounded by architectural tools probably
Cherub with a garland of plants and fruit
The full dedicatory page to the bishop whose garden this work catalogs. It’s a very fancy copperplate engraving with the two putti on either side at the top of his portrait
more #puttiofscience, or at least of architecture and gardening, courtesy of the Hortus Eystettensis:

New members of the #PuttiOfScience Appreciation Society may enjoy my 2020 Instagram Advent Calendar. Christmas Day was Newton themed: www.instagram.com/p/CJLOoklpoU... (I think you can scroll back from there to see more)
Title page of Clarici’s 1726 “Istoria e coltura delle piante,” printed in black and red, with a decorative plate of two cherubs
Closeup on the cherubs, one of whom is holding flowers and pushing a watering can with his foot and the other of whom is pruning a citrus tree in a very fancy urn
I think I need to start a new thread to collect botanical #puttiofscience. #pottani?
#cherubsofscience
However, the world must also be warned of their crimes: beware the murder cherubs of Vesalius
#puttiofscience
#cherubsofscience
The world must know of this!
#puttiofscience
#cherubsofscience
That’s a very good not least because of the variety of wings - both bird & insect. #enthist meets #PuttiOfScience 😆
Thank you. You’re in!
Join the International #PuttiOfScience Appreciation Society (IPOSAS) now! Membership applications may be sent to @rhiggitt.bsky.social & me and need to include your favourite #PuttiOfScience image.
We really need to start the #PuttiOfScience Appreciation Society. 😆
and here we see how important #puttiofscience were for computational labour before we had lots of graduate students
this evening's discovery: that #puttiofscience are a thing, e.g. here: wellcomecollection.org/stories/putt...
Almost #PuttiOfScience but most certainly #PuttiOf(K)Ink 😆
View of the entrance archway (19thc) with turrets etc. The sunlit main building can be glimpsed through the arch.
Detail cropped from the previous photo, showing a stone carving of putti welding a hammer over an anvil. Below are two winged cherubs, monogram and decorative stonework
So many, many times I have passed the gates of George Heriot's School without stopping to look at it (as opposed to the amazing main building and views of Edinburgh Castle). I only saw today the #puttiofindustry there (variant on #puttiofscience)
Did someone say #PuttiOfScience?

Congratulations!
Hurray for the publication & for #PuttiOfScience of course. 👏🏻
And look! I got some #puttiofscience onto the front cover! Busy surveying the sites and sights of early modern London
Hygge #PuttiOfScience , @rhiggitt.bsky.social ? Frolicking instead of sciencing! Shocking! 😂
I‘m sure you will. It’s astonishing how little research there is on these figures in #HistSTM & #HistKnow, even in #Arthistory given how ubiquitous #PuttiOfScience are. I guess they were always dismissed as decorative and repetitive but I think they do important work. Pun intended. 😁
Title page of a book printed in Fraktur, with an engraving of a large half-timber farmyard with cattle. A small putto with wings shows off a bovine in the foreground.
These are delightful, just learning #puttiofscience is a thing. Does this qualify as a putto of (agricultural) science? (Joachim Bergen, Anleitung zur Viehzucht für die Landwirthe, 1785)
There are always more #PuttiOfScience! I am saving a really excellent couple to cheer us up on some rainy day.
Oh how I missed #PuttiOfScience
This is an excellent example indeed.
Engraving from the title page of Cary's Actual Survey. One putti trails a perambulator (surveyor's wheel), gesturing to another, who kneels, using a globe to support his drawing. Between them is an obelisk.
Some excellent #puttiofscience here, busy as land surveyors with a perambulator (or waywiser, odometer, pedometer, surveyors wheel etc), globe, dividers, paper and pen. From John Cary's Actual Survey of the Great Post Roads (1784), surveyed by Aaron Arrowsmith #18thcentury #histsci 📜🗃️
Some #PuttiOfScience (astronomy even!) for @rhiggitt.bsky.social .
