R2R 2026 - D2S6 - Open Science Infrastructure (Green)
R2R 2026 - D2S6 - Open Science Infrastructure (Green) YouTube video by Researcher to Reader

Here’s video of the panel I was on at #R2RConf about infrastructure to support research. My 2 main points were a) libraries are the ultimate research-supporting infrastructures and b) (with my DOAJ hat on) funders have to support the infrastructure that they rely on

After a week in London at #R2RConf and #CopimConference my open research roadshow continues at a 'Scottish Research Integrity and Culture Week' event at @rcsed.bsky.social in Edinburgh where I'm on a panel to talk about 'expanding openness' for arts + humanities.

Following on from discussions about community engagement last week at #r2rconf, I've gathered together some of the approaches we take in @countermetrics.bsky.social.

Community and COUNTER - COUNTER Metrics Organisations engage with their communities in different ways. We thought it would be interesting to share our approaches with you.

Last week @sianharris.bsky.social was at #r2rconf and part of a workshop on community engagement. So, what does community engagement look like in COUNTER and how can you get involved? www.countermetrics.org/community-an...

Interesting to note that generative AI (just mentioned) has not had much airtime at #CopimConference. #R2RConf was obsessed by it.

Reflecting, not for the first time, that #CopimConference and #R2RConf have been so close in terms of content, date, and location, but not community. There was a whole workshopping series during Research to Reader where (mainly) publishers discussed "Book Metadata, Discoverability & Usage"

Another wonderful #r2rConf. Thanks to all involved. Followed by more great conversations at #ScholarlySocial.
Now for some London family and friends catching up!

We sponsored a lively roundtable at the #R2RConf this week, exploring how peer review could work better for researchers.

One comment struck a chord. Peer review is human behaviour. It is subjective. There is no single standard. Different reviewers will always see different things.

Thoughts?

Yep, all is well. Thanks for asking. It was great to share together at #R2RConf

I moved from in-person #R2RConf to virtual #CopimConference. Sadly couldn't stay on in London due to last minute matters. Jealous of you, @simonjbains.bsky.social

I’ve moved smoothly from #R2RConf over the last two days to #CopimConference today and tomorrow. I’m fascinated to know if anyone else is attending both events. Very, very similar in theme, but it feels like two different communities.

We had a great time at the Researcher to Reader Conference this week, where our Growth Director, Jason De Boer, presented a lightning talk on “Designing Peer Review Around Researchers.”

We need to divert our resources to sustaining the infrastructure that makes it possible for the community to establish new norms. We need to encourage and reward the behaviour or practices that meet the standards we intentionally set in policy. #r2rconf

What are we trying to sustain? We can't sustain the current system, the waste, the bloat, the profit margins of private companies and meet our goals for a healthy #scholcomms future. #r2rconf

I found it interesting to hear 'sustainability' discussed several times. What I didn't have the courage to raise me hand and ask is 'what will we stop doing in order to make what we need to do sustainable?'. #r2rconf

I notice words. The words that I noticed at #r2rconf were trust, coordination (rather than alignment), communities (but sometimes meaning customers, stakeholders, users), incentives and change. 'Going beyond' and 'balancing power' seemed to be a running theme.

I wish I'd realised sooner that there was #r2rconf chatter happening over on BlueSky... I'd forgotten the old habit of the conference side chat that was common on Twitter. I was missing it. It's been a rich experience, and a unique conference as far as I know.

AI bots are overwhelming some journals Web traffic from the bots is disrupting journal websites, but chemistry titles aren’t yet inundated

On AI bots overwhelming academic journals that was just mentioned at #R2RConf by @ianmulvany.bsky.social:

The panel on Infrastructure including a Global South representation is promising. So is the wide range of sector inclusion: funder, libraries, indexer, and grassroots players, chaired by Emma Green of @investinopen.bsky.social.

Final session at #r2rconf on infrastructure sustainability. A question - who should pay for the sustainable open science infrastructure?

Yesterday's keynote at the #R2RConf from Leslie McIntosh at Digital Science raised a thought-provoking question: Is science resilient?
It prompts a necessary call to action to all in research and scholarly communications: that depends on us.

What are your thoughts?

Great talks on AI at #R2RConf from @nikeshgo.bsky.social of Cactus and @simoneragavooloo.bsky.social of Frontiers.
A helpful point via the audience from @ianmulvany.bsky.social advising to distinguish between what the AI tool can do and what it knows when using.

My reflection, as a librarian working in an institution that is being called to action, is that my academic colleagues are all consumed by what AI is doing to their teaching. Connecting to researchers (who are also educators) via the librarians who know them best would be my recommendation #R2RConf

Today at #R2RConf, KGL PubFactory's Ruth Miller shared insights on the most pressing issue in #scholcomm: how to prepare trusted content and infrastructure for an AI-driven future. It isn’t about adding more point solutions. It’s about integration.

So far, I don't think either of our two keynote speakers this afternoon have specifically identified librarians as having a role in contributing to the solutions to the big AI challenges they've identified. (Happy to be corrected if I missed it) #R2RConf

It's taken until now for someone to note that in a discussion about researcher incentives and guidelines for AI use in academia, Funders are conspicuously absent.
