‘Lan Zhan!’ He can barely keep his giggles contained by the time he gets the door shut behind him. ‘You’ll never believe this. The innkeeper seems to think I’m one of my own fake disciples! And they didn’t want to talk to us last night because they were worried you might be Moling Su!’ It’s hard to tell which of these revelations is most responsible for the look of disgusted horror that overtakes Lan Zhan’s face. His mouth opens, and then closes again, either because he can’t think of anything suitably frosty to say to these accusations or, equally likely, because whatever he wants to say is forbidden by one of three thousand rules. ‘…Did you learn anything else?’ he asks at last, once he finally gets his expression under control. ‘Well,’ Wei Wuxian answers brightly, ‘he did also warn me that the real Yiling Laozu is alive again and not to attract his attention. I suppose I can try to be careful about that.’
