Digital archeology of film is super important, says Hsu, making historic images and art available for research.

Just this slide showing archival news reels shows how important this is, esp. given Taiwan's history of KMT censorship and information control (also re 台灣史補課 wave right now). #RDMW2026 🧪

Sidebar: Taiwan has a rich history of filmmaking and local cinemas. Many of these small town cinemas have been lost or are ruins hidden in plain sight (follow @spectralcodex.com for more). And Tâi-gí was once a language suppressed by KMT dictatorship, adding another conservation layer. #RDMW2026 🧪

Rorie Edmunds replies there could be a way to connect labels being developed by Local Contexts @localcontexts.bsky.social into metadata in DOIs etc. so that these flags can come up to researchers perusing data, cautioning Indigenous permissions needed: localcontexts.org

I asked panel a question if persistent identifiers (PIDs) can be used as a flag alerting users that data/item is covered under Indigenous rights/additional permissions required. Umin says difficult to enforce whether users ultimately respect rules (also re settler laws/jurisdictions) #RDMW2026 🧪

Hilarious but sad reality of research surveys in Taiwan: Scams are a wide-spread problem in Taiwan, so many people suspicious of outreach from strangers. Wang Su-Fen of NCUE says local police sometimes get reports of scammers and turns out to be people misunderstanding her research team #RDMW2026 🧪
