Children deserve to have autonomy. Children deserve to grow up in a world where their wishes and boundaries are honored. Children need a world where the adults around them respond to their needs and respect their wishes. Giving children a formal process to shape their school environment to their needs is a step in the right direction.

Support Trans Children’s right to autonomy! Select “Oppose” on HB 1038 HB 1038 is “Prohibiting puberty blocking medications, cross-sex hormones, and gender transition surgeries for minors.”

Transphobia is a scapegoat for extremist conservatives to rally their base and direct them to harm some of the most vulnerable in our community, trans children. Trans affirming healthcare is a broad stroke term, that will disrupt best health practices and patient safety. Trans children do recieve puberty blockers, but they are also widely prescribed to cis-gender children for multiple health reasons (like PCOS, or Endo). The government does not need to get between a person and their doctor. No one is performing cosmetic gender-reassignment surgery on minors, this is another whataboutism, coming from broad stroke terminology, which has led to wide spread misinformation and transphobia. Washington has the opportunity to be a beacon of hope, and resist the far rights narrative. Stand firm. Do not sway to the forces that are pressuring you to abandon the protections, freedoms, and rights of minorities in Washington State.

“Solidarity, not charity.” Mutual aid stands in contrast to the charity/nonprofit system. Charities typically receive most of their funding from wealthy individuals and institutions, such as universities, hedge funds, or corporations. Charity creates a relationship of dependency that fails to acknowledge and solve permanent structural problems in our society. Charity maintains the same relationships of power, while mutual aid is a system of reciprocal support. Through mutual aid networks, everyone in a community can contribute their strengths, even the most vulnerable.

Mutual Aid? Mutual aid comes from inside the community. Mutual aid does not intend to slap a bandage over the problem, obscuring the real issue. It intends to build new systems which address inequality through interdependent self-determination -- actively responding and adapting to the needs of your community. But Who Needs It? The short answer is everyone! All people have experienced a material, emotional or physical unmet need. Lets think of other people who have present unmet needs. Your little sibling? A neighbor? Who else? Work on shifting perspective. Your community is everyone around you.

Groups in Need Disabled, unsheltered, and incarcerated people, BIPOC, immigrants, agricultural workers etc. Each of those groups have unique needs that are understood and met by people already in those communities. Find the people who address needs and ask them what they need to help the group with needs. Skills Multi-Lingual De-Escalation NARCAN/Medical Legislative Knowledge Material Resources Foraging Education Organizing Fundraising Social media Your Community Are you interested in Mutual Aid? People in your community need you!! If you know your skills, leverage them to help the people within your community. Some communities some may not yet have groups that address certain needs that you, and your friends desire to fill. Be open. Sometimes its better to consolidate your efforts and unite with other people or pre-existing groups. Other times, when the system is the problem you must address the issue with your friends outside the system. Ask questions, be open and willing to be accountable to your community. Take initiative. You’ve got this!
