#RECCAP2 paper alert, Jemma Wadham led the polar chapter, summarizing knowns and (large) unknowns of carbon stocks and fluxes from ice sheets to land fringes, fjords, 🌊 oceans and sediments.🧪 Excellent reference starting point for future work.

Also, I’m grateful for five fantastic years in the @upgroup.bsky.social at @usyseth.bsky.social , where I was trusted to lead #RECCAP2. Those experiences and the amazing network I built are the basis for this next adventure!

Does any here have an idea why the #RECCAP2 (and GCB) hindcast ocean models accumulate less heat than the observation-based estimates suggest?

During #RECCAP2, we have found a few reasons that show why ocean models in hindcast mode underestimate the ocean carbon sink, some are due to the setup and some due to physics and biogeochemistry (agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....).

Trend over 1985−2018 for ensemble mean CO2 flux, pCO2w, and SIC from the pCO2 products, the ocean biogeochemical hindcast and data assimilation models, and the atmospheric inversions. Negative values indicate increasing CO2 flux into the ocean in panels (a) and (b). Darker hatched areas represent values in grids where less than two third of the estimates show the same sign of the trend. Ensemble means are calculated across the estimates, which cover the full period of 1985–2018.

Time series of the decomposition of the net CO2 flux (Fnet; black line) into the natural steady-state flux (Fnat,ss; aqua ribbon), the CO2 effect (Fant,ss; yellow ribbon), and the climate effect (Fnat,ns + Fant,ns; blue hatch and ribbon). Negative values (or widths of the ribbons) indicate the CO2 influx to the ocean, and positive values (or widths of the hatches) indicate CO2 outflux from the ocean.

Yasunaka et al. unravelled the exceptional role of climate change for the CO₂ sink in the Arctic Ocean. Here, the accelerated CO₂ uptake is primarily caused by sea ice loss, whereas rising atmospheric CO₂ dominates the trends in all other #RECCAP2 regions.

Don't miss the thread by @jens-d-mueller.bsky.social on regional ocean carbon cycle assessments and processes aka #RECCAP2 results.

What happened so far: global ocean, Southern Ocean, seasonality

Next episodes: all the other ocean basins, biological carbon pump, coastal ocean...

#RECCAP2 wrap-up coming!

Over the past 5 years, 100 oceanographer's from all around the world scrutinised the ocean carbon sink through models and observations.

Our studies have been published in an special issue:

Starting tomorrow, I'll introduce one paper a day.

Schematic of key characteristics of the Southern Ocean carbon sink.

Schematic of key characteristics of the Southern Ocean carbon sink.

Time for a first post today as the #RECCAP #Southern Ocean chapter came out today - only four years and seven months after the first #RECCAP2 meeting in Gotemba!

We characterise the carbon sink in terms of mean, seasonal cycle, trends and storage.
