A very good couple of days at #ROAC. Can't believe I've been doing activism in one form or another with these folks for so many years.

(I stuck two fingers up slightly too late 😭)

As #ROAC draws to a close, Post Office Press and @openhumanities.bsky.social are pleased to jointly publish Publishing Activism within/without a Toxic University, a booklet experimentally exploring the role of the university in radical publishing and practice. doi.org/10.17613/x1t...

Lucy Barnes (@alittleroad.bsky.social) discussing Open Book Publishers and open access monograph publishing. Bemoaning the Marxists who publish with Elsevier. The ideas expressed in a book don't always align with the practices used to produce that book. #ROAC

Journal of Radical Librarianship An open access journal for radical librarianship, publishing work that contributes to a discourse around critical library and information theory and practice.

And now it's my friend and colleague of many years @walkyouhome.bsky.social discussing the Journal of Radical Librarianship, a journal that emerged from the Radical Librarians Collective we were both participants in. journal.radicallibrarianship.org #ROAC

A valuable acknowledgement from Magalí Rabasa that the rise of American neo-fascism makes these discussions about radical publishing and infrastructures of care even more important and pressing. #ROAC

"It allows for the development of collective writing and publishing projects under the conditions of modest or no access (e.g. Rojava) or in the work of vulnerable groups who require that their content never be accessible online." #ROAC

Sandpoints Sandpoints¶ Sandpoints is a publishing platform developed through rapid prototyping in the processes of collaborative writing projects such as PirateCare Syllabus, MachineLearning Curriculum or Dotawo...

Dotawo: A Journal of Nubian Studies uses Sandpoints software to publish, a publishing platform built on Gitea and Hugo using git hooks to publish when changes are pushed to a repository. We used to have a similar publishing workflow for the @copim.bsky.social website. #ROAC

Excited to hear from Vincent van Gerven Oei of @punctumbooks.bsky.social. He's always a terrific speaker. #ROAC

"just get on with it": the refusal of 'convention' is a positive action in and of itself! #ROAC

Reminds me of something my father-in-law quoted to me from Bakunin the other day: "Anyone who makes plans for after the revolution is a reactionary". #ROAC

"Awesome open access publishing isn't going to fix the problems with the structures of capitalism." It can be a good thing, it can help people, but we need revolution for real lasting political change. #ROAC

I would strongly recommend any LIS students/early/earlier career librarians to take a peek at the #ROAC presentations. For all of the reasons.

What would need to happen for it to *not matter to us* that the work we do for scholarly publishing is unpaid? -- Dr Stephen Shukatis @ #ROAC

"the work we do for the love it" YES. Pleasure not duty, or, in pursuit of please (Kroptkin). @simonxix.com, @sluginkpress.bsky.social and I touch on this in the context of radical librarianshuip in our forthcoming article later this year #ROAC

Stevphen Shukaitis talking about @minorcompositions.bsky.social and his attitude of deliberate amateurism: doing this publishing work for the love of it rather than for professional qualification. Reminds me of Kropotkin talking about "pleasure not duty". #ROAC

I am very excited for #ROAC today. Yesterday was a real kick up the why we do what we do. Today is going to be exhilarating, and I mightily recommend joining online if you're unable to be here.

Not going to lie... #ROAC is re-energising my cynical antisoul for the politics of solace in the hellscape of academia/scholcomms/2025. Hope ain't for me. But the scrap sure as fuck is. We will fight (between ourselves and against the systems). And as such we win. The struggle is real. And eternal.

Digital archiving and preservation are important but it's better to publish something ephemeral and knowingly temporary if it's a choice between that and not publishing anything at all. We don't have to be stymied by the traditional permanence of publishing of old. #ROAC
