THESE ARE THE TRUTHS OF OUR FOREFATHERS / LIES OF THE EMPIRE Before time began, before anything existed, there was only Metzteotl, the ancient moon. And Metzteotl was everything and everything was Metzteotl. In his infinite solitude, Metzteotl knew all that was, is, and would be, but grew lonely and weary of his omniscience. Longing for mystery and companionship, he tore out half of his brain from his skull and, from his chest, he ripped out four left and four right ribs. With the flesh of his mind and the bones of his body, he shaped a partner, he breathed his spirit into her nostrils and named her "Naktokatl", the flesh-spider, and placed her on his shadow. And they both shared a fragment of his knowledge of all things. In their mutual understanding, they both rejoiced. In the shade of Metzteotl's moon, Naktokatl wove the threads of destiny, fate, and doom, then rested upon them. But as the threads hummed and chanted, she found a hole amidst her weave. Not of her making, nor of Metzteotl's, but an eldritch void that had been waiting in the silence before the ancient moon first knew itself to be alone—a stillness that had listened, timelessly, for an eternity. And from within that profound and primordial silence, four voices spoke. "O lady, o lady! The threads are too dim! We crave light! We crave light!" The voices pleaded and echoed endlessly from the pit, "O lady, o lady! We crave light!" Young Naktokatl then asked Metzteotl for his eyes and Metzteotl gladly gave them. From his eyes, Naktokatl forged the sun and the stars for them. And the world was with light. But the light was too fierce and scorching, and it singed the threads of destiny, making them frail and brittle. And the voices wailed again. "O lady, o lady! The light is too hot! We thirst! We thirst!" The voices begged and echoed endlessly from the pit, "O lady, o lady! We thirst!" Young Naktokatl then asked Metzteotl for his blood and Metzteotl gladly gave it. From his blood, Naktokatl brewed the seas…

The flesh that covering your bones is a stolen gift. It belongs to Naktokatl, the ancient spider who wove the threads upon which the world rests. She wants it back and her will shall not be denied. Will you peel yourself as a living offering to the great spider? Spill your blood and that of others in a hopeless war? Or destroy those who deceived her and defy her wrath? Whichever one chooses, ultimately doesn't matter, the world is already damned. More than seven millennia of ceremonial Flower Wars have left the once continent-spanning Teotekah Empire in shambles. The frail, old mind of Tezkozamalotl, Huei-Tlahtoani, supreme ruler of the seven imperial tribes, has finally been crushed by the weight of madness, a consequence of his inescapable obsession with the accursed eastern continent of Liktlan. At night, he is tormented by feverish, prophetic nightmares, festering with visions of traveling there and sacrificing the True Thieves of the Flesh as the final offering to Huehuei-Naktokatl's ancient bargain. On the eve of the 8000th year since the Imperial Covenant's consecration, he crawls out of his temple-palace, a rotting, flayed husk of skin and bones, to a horde of his loyal fanatics at the base of the pyramid. After igniting a piece of black agave paper, he coldly snatches a blood-obsidian knife and plunges it into his own chest, ripping his still-beating heart out. He viciously sinks his teeth into it, then smashes its remains under the judgement of Huehuei-Metzteotl's bone-white moon. As crimson gore drips from his mouth, he flashes a maniacal grin and addresses his followers, issuing one final command… KOKOTÖNA.
