#RPPrize Winner Charlotte Stobart upon receiving the award: 'As I explore the experiences and representations of polio-disability further, through my masters dissertation, and soon my PhD, I am constantly reminded of the importance of this (relatively overlooked) field and unique cohort.'

Thank you everyone for joining myself and @SSMedicine. Huge thanks also to @HPS_Vanessa for the support, and to all who have engaged with the #RPPrize tweets.
We'll be back tomorrow morning at 9am GMT for our regular check-in if you're #AmWriting - bye for now 👋
We're actually at the end of our twitter hour now - and I've not had chance to trail the amazing accolades on offer for those shortlisted and the winner of the #RPPrize. You can read about them in detail here: https://sshm.org/portfolio/prizes/ Any queries? Get in touch 16/?
We’re working more on this too. But there are *significant* benefits: eligibility to submit to the #RPPrize, to apply for bursaries and grants, and you receive book discounts.
You can read more about membership here: https://sshm.org/portfolio/membership/ 15/?
Part of #RPPrize eligibility is SSHM membership, but we’re also trying to push down the barriers of affordability: there are discounts for students, unwaged, senior and for people from South American, African and Asian countries https://academic.oup.com/shm/subscribe 14/?
It's been mentioned that there's something structural within HE framing who can submit to the #RPPrize, but many excellent MAs are completed everywhere—maybe submitting a good essay from this might get shortlisted for the #RPPrize and this used to springboard to PhD funding 13/?
You can read more about the ins-and-outs of the #RPPrize on @SSHMedicine's dedicated webpage: https://sshm.org/portfolio/prizes/ And I'm happy to address any queries by email - r dot i dot wynter at bham dot ac dot uk 12/?
A very useful point of clarity from @DManikarnika, and is another example of the way we sometimes confusingly employ #ECR to mean a range of folks.
To be clear, the #RPPrize is for students, postgraduates, and very recent (ie, for the next round, completed in 2021) ECRs 11/?
I studied for my undergrad at a post-92 university here in the UK; I know how many talented students are at new universities and across the full range of higher education facilities. The #RPPrize is for you too! 10/?
Last year, we had no entries from Northern Ireland and Wales, and only one from Scotland - the #RPPrize is open for all four UK nations, but it's also for #ECRs and #PostGrads around the world 9/?
That said the #RPPrize is still a competition, but what I'm passionate about is diversifying entries - this includes people with less confidence or who find elements of academic life uncomfortable, who might not usually try for something like this. The competition is for you! 8/?
Are you working in other time zones? We and others can still find you via the hashtag #RPPrize, and you can set your own check-ins. It's about building a community of people working alongside one another for support and even advice 7/?
During November's #AcWriMo2021, @SSHMedicine and myself are running three check-ins each day in the week: 9am, 1pm, and 5pm GMT. These are in place to create some form of accountability for yourself, and to seek support. Use #RPPrize to connect with others 6/?
The #RPPrize is designed for #PostGrads and #ECRs.
The deadline for receiving entries is 5pm UK time on the 1 February 2022. This means there's still enough time to get writing and participate in the #AcWriMo write-along with @SSHMedicine 5/?
The #RPPrize essays should be:
- 5000-9000 words in length (including footnotes)
- and referenced in accordance with conventions of Social History of Medicine, available at http://shm.oxfordjournals.org under ‘Instructions for authors’ 4/?
The key details about the essay itself are that it should:be unpublished and not submitted to any other competition at the same time, nor already have won or been shortlisted or runner-up for a prize offered by anyone other than the entrant’s own university #RPPrize 2/?
I thought, @SSHMedicine, we could first go through the details of the #RPPrize, and pick up any queries along the way.
@SSHMedicine has just retweeted a thread about the Prize, and I want to build on that... 1/?
25 minutes until @SSHMedicine's twitter hour!
We're talking about the Roy Porter Prize, and hoping you can share and we can amplify #AcWriMo tips.
Do you have any queries about the Prize? Any #AmWriting hints? Hit reply now and use the hashtag #RPPrize so we can find you
1pm - it's check-in time for @SSHMedicine's #RPPrize write-along for #AcWriMo2021! How's your day going?
I've managed to get most of my admin things done, making headspace for reading and thinking. Will re-read and start to think about how to rewrite my article this afternoon.
It's the first 9am check-in for the #RPPrize write-along - what are your plans for #AcWriMo?
In November, I'm rewriting an article. I don't have much time today, so I'm going to re-read the draft I have towards that goal.
#DisHist #HistSTM #HistPsych #HistMed
Thank you all, you have prevented three unfinished drafts! Over 70% of you voted for extensive revisions to a completed draft - that's what I'll be doing during the @SSHMedicine #RPPrize write-along.
Thinking of joining me and @SSHMedicine for the #RPPrize write-along for #AcWriMo? I'm considering what I'm going to need to line up ahead of time, so I can really get stuck-in!
#ECR #ECRChat #PostGrad #PhD #HistMed #DisHist #HistSTM #HistPsych
Can you help me decide which article I should work on during #AcWriMo #NaNoWriMo and the #RPPrize write-along? It has to fit between A Lot Of Things already in the diary - so, extensive revision of a completed draft, complete one half-finished, or start a new one?
