“Interesting strategy you’re taking.” Kunikida could hear from behind, as Ranpo’s head leaned in over his shoulder to inspect his notebook closely. “Bold. Probably wrong, but bold.” Even when it was crystal clear that wasn’t a full-fledged compliment, since part of the feedback already suggested the plan could go wrong, he couldn’t help but at least enjoy what everything else entailed; being praised by Ranpo wasn’t something one should take for granted, after all. Then, Kunikida moved on to focus on the most important part of it all, namely the critique. “Wrong where?” He swiftly asked, already scanning the page up and down in search of mistakes. “It’ll help me a great deal, Ranpo-san.” Of course, it usually wasn’t that easy; it had been taken into account. “Still can’t believe you’re not seeing it yourself.” There wasn’t any malice in Ranpo’s tone, though. “Also, if I help you, I’m gonna be robbing you of a chance to learn, right?” Technically, yes. But still… “Would you at least give me a hint, please?” Maybe it wouldn’t work, sure, but it was still worth the try; even just a small clue would save him quite some time.
“Hm…” That, at least at first, sounded more like the preface of a negative. To Kunikida’s surprise, what came next wasn’t it. “Alright. What’d you do without me, huh?” Indeed, and more so when the following part of his reply wasn’t by using words, but pointing at a specific point in the detailed plan Kunikida had been writing down. “Here.” Oh. That definitely gave him something to keep working with. “Thanks, Ranpo-san.” He lost no time in saying, smiling. “What’d we do without you, yeah.”
