Today is World Kindness Day 💛
Showing kindness towards others is a fundamental part of the ReSET groups – whether it's listening, showing empathy, or helping someone feel seen by your actions. Let’s take a moment to notice others and choose kindness today 🌸 #worldkindnessday #ReSETMentalHealth
The conference may be over, but ReSET is not! We continue to look for opportunities to push our work further and welcome the voices of those that make that possible. Keep tuned over the coming months… 👀
Thank you again to Lala for the lovely content that we can happily reflect.😆

And finally here's a summary of this impressive KiVa anti-bullying work led by Lucy Bowes #ReSETMentalHealth
Lucy expresses disappointment that they found no evidence for impact on (teaching reported) internalizing or externalizing symptoms #ReSETMentalHealth
This is not uncommon for anti-bullying interventions says Lucy, citing the 2022 Guzman Holst systematic review in JCPP
There's no evidence that KiVa was less effective for different ages, girls vs boys, or students who get free school meals, which is good news #ReSETMentalHealth
The trial found a 13% reduction in the odds of bullying victimisation in KiVa school students, when compared with students from schools continuing with usual practice #ReSETMentalHealth
Lucy has recently led a KiVa RCT in the UK. The primary outcome was pupil self-reported bullying-victimisation.
Research Q: Is KiVa more effective than usual practice in reducing bullying-victimisation among students aged 7 to 11 years in UK primary schools?
#ReSETMentalHealth
These are long-term effects of the intervention in KiVa schools in Finland (2009-2015), looking at the proportion of students who have been bullied, or who are bullying others repeatedly #ReSETMentalHealth
There has been a 'blip' in this data around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, says Lucy
In order to reduce bullying...
Focus on a whole school approach that influences the behaviour of bystanders and targets specific incidents of bullying.
These are the components of the KiVa intervention #ReSETMentalHealth
Bullying is one of the most tractable public mental health problems, and the good news is that we have effective ways to reduce it, e.g. the KiVa Anti-bullying Programme #ReSETMentalHealth
A study by Lucy, published in 2017 found that 30% of 15 year olds reported some form of bullying in the past 2-3 months.
Bullying is still very common, and lots of depression in young people is caused by bullying.
#ReSETMentalHealth
Bullying can occur anywhere, and at any age – researchers have examined the prevalence and impact of bullying in kindergarten, the workplace, in prison and in the army.
Lucy's #ReSETMentalHealth talk is on bullying at school, or among school age children.
Our final presentation of the day is from Prof. Lucy Bowes who is going to talk about Stand Together: Outcomes and Implications of a UK Anti-Bullying Randomised Controlled Trial #ReSETMentalHealth
Excellent talk from René at #ReSETMentalHealth
Find out more about his work here: www.rene-veenstra.nl
This study shows that there are both positive and negative leaders in schools, and that the KIVA intervention can help increase the positivity, says René
#ReSETMentalHealth
René is calling for there to be job roles for young people in schools, perhaps a little like Otis in Sex Education. Could some of these roles focus on anti-bullying or other prosocial behaviours? #ReSETMentalHealth
Student leaders in schools are sometimes bullies, but sometimes positive leaders
Findings support the existence of a double standard by showing that girls who report more sexual partners receive fewer friendships and more peer dislike, in contrast to boys who report similar behaviours. #ReSETMentalHealth
Friendship selection based on sexual debut appears stronger among girls than boys, likely because girls face more social scrutiny and sanctions related to their sexual attitudes and experiences compared to boys. #ReSETMentalHealth
Favourite slide so far...
The social network from Cassie McMillan's study
The 'chain of affection' works through a spanning tree, with the
worst-case scenario being sexually transmitted infections.

jimi adams work looks at Bundles of Behaviours.
People do not adopt single behaviours per se, but they adopt bundles. #ReSETMentalHealth
The timing of mental health interventions is key, says René
Intervene before fifteen he advises, before addiction takes hold.
This is true for smoking and vaping.
#ReSETMentalHealth
Young people often select their friends based on whether they have anxiety or depression, or are lonely.
Peers also sometimes end friendships if they become too anxious or depressed etc.
#ReSETMentalHealth
These two fields of research (social network research and peer-led interventions) are completely split, says René
#ReSETMentalHealth
This approach has worked in research in the US and Indonesia
Existing anti-bullying interventions are not that effective, says René #ReSETMentalHealth
Peer-led interventions may be more successful, because they may be
- Less intimidating
- More appropriate
- More likely to internalise
The relative social status is established at the very start of secondary school.
Those who stop bullying early on are more socially successful, says René #ReSETMentalHealth
Is it Selection or Influence?
Why are friends so similar to each other?
#ReSETMentalHealth
This talk will explain how similarities emerge among friends, how norms diffuse across groups, and how peer influence can promote risk behaviours as well as adaptive outcomes such as academic engagement, pro-sociality, and healthy lifestyles #ReSETMentalHealth
