By Jacques Goldstyn… The cover shows two foregrounded green-clad, rifle-with-bayonet carrying, rucksack wearing soldier buddies glancing down at a wild-growing poppy as they get behind their fellow troop in the background, walking through a rural war-torn scene, bombed house, mother and child collecting wood in a wheelbarrow…
YES!
Love that book. Have used it for #ReadAlouds.
Similarly, The Eleventh Hour is phenomenal.

Cover: Echo, by Adam Rex A blonde white boy stands looking into a pond at his reflection; the title word is half on the bank and half reflecting below in the water. I have a library barcode up in the top right and another one upside down and mirroring it in the bottom left. My barcode gag is right and proper! (My barcode gag is right and proper!) All should emulate it. (All should emulate it.)
Cover: Simon and the better bone. Shows a pup with a bone in its mouth; it’s in a crouch at the edge of the pond, downward facing dog pose, staring at its reflection. For my copy at school, I placed mirror image barcodes above/below the waterline. My barcode gag is right and proper; wise and necessary; emulate and be happy.
This book, Echo, by Adam Rex, absolutely needed a second barcode…an upside down second barcode…no way around it…the same is true of Simon and the Better Bone too.
(Both will be great #ReadAlouds; already used Simon today—a hit)
**Am I the only one who does weird barcode gags?**
Hope not.

Note: would 💯 recommend not reading the “narrator’s note.” just stop at the last chapter. The last chapter is a perfect ending.

As much as I LOVE #nonfiction #kidlit, buy tons of unique stuff, booktalk it constantly, genre café it & facilitate finding it for classroom teachers to read to kids…
I rarely use nonfiction for my library #readalouds …which was a deficit I was going to try to fix these last two years…OK, SOON!
Books pictured include Sam and Eva, there are no ants in this book, pine cone, goat, stone boat, the island before no, spider in the well, pop goes the nursery rhyme, Hank goes honk, how we share cake, we are definitely human, and small in the city. My story corner throne is painted yellowy gold. It was designed and built with students in the library, using hand tools years ago. It has two large back rails that stand up behind the chair and point towards the ceiling, and they are affixed with sign posts pointing the way to fictional worlds, such as Wildwood, VFD headquarters, Despereaux’s castle, the 13 story, treehouse, etc.
Recess, then another class on the way, but pictured here on the Story Corner throne are all of the #ReadAlouds I’ve set aside for last, this, and next week.
📚👍
So much fun!
I always give each class 3 or 4 choices. We do a quick silent vote, read the winner, then go find and check out their books.
📚👍
Lauren Child = super fab.
❤️ her artistic style!
Esp ❤️ original Charlie & Lola books, & Clarice Bean ones.
