I posted on X today:
HappyNew Year all ye who actively follow here (X) & love #ReadingRosemarySutcliff.
But I will no longer post on this (X) platform with owner Elon Musk—a dangerous self-seeking right-wing ideologue with no regard to facts—actively slurring this country’s democracy & leaders.

Rosemary Sutcliff’s autobiography of her early life is named from an A E Housman poem: ‘Blue Remembered Hills: A Recollection”. She starts with her birth in Surrey … Text of first para: “When anybody asks me where I was born, or when I am called on to provide that information in filling in a form, I admit with a distinct sense of apology that I was born in Surrey. Why the sense of apology I do not know. Surrey is quite as rich in history and, at least in parts, quite as beautiful in its own way as any other county in England. I can only think that it is because my father, like all the best sailors except Nelson, was Devon born and bred, and my mother was born in Dorset; and because of that, I grew up with the feeling that the West Country is the only right and proper place in which to have one's beginnings.”

As I set out here on Bluesky, a gentle reminder to readers old and new that the eminent writer of historical fiction & children’s literature is not Rosemary Sutcliff, not Sutcliffe! There is no ‘E’ in her family name
