Bus, taxi association calls for strong measures to address seven-seaters’ speed Namibia Bus and Taxi Association secretary general Pendapala Nakathingo has called for stringent regulatory measures to address seven-seaters’ speed concerns. Minister of works and transport Veikko Nekundi on Tuesday announced in parliament that seven-seaters will now be able to travel long distances following an approval by the ministry to allow for long distance permits for the vehicle. The minister also announced passenger transport renewable two-year permit conversions. Nakathingo says the call to issue permits for seven-seaters has been long coming and welcomed the move, however, he is concerned about the speed seven-seaters are known for. “As much as we welcome the move, I am concerned about it, because in our previous discussions we advocated for permits on short distances for nearby towns and not long distances due to the lives lost as a result of these speedy seven-seaters. “The ministry will now have to consolidate stringent measures to regulate these permits when they issue them, it must be accompanied with a speed limit,” Nakathingo says. He recommends that the two-year renewable permit period be extended for at least five to 10 years. “Two years is not sufficient enough, especially for taxi operators who’s bread and butter depends on it. In two years time one cannot make a profit, especially for those who enter an agreement with vehicle owners to work off the vehicle,” he adds. He says permits must be processed in a conducive and orderly manner to avoid lengthy processes that often frustrated operators. When asked about re-registering the union after it was deregistered by the ministry of labour due to failure to comply with financial requirements, Nakathingo said ongoing work is being done to register the union while blaming political interference in the union’s deregistration. He also says the lack of membership is one of the challenges the union faces in running its administration. Despite this, Nakathingo says he continues to be available to fight for operators and calls for political will to intervene, citing that the transport industry is limping without the union as he continues to receive complaints from operators and other stakeholders.
