A massive, flat-topped sea stack rises from a wide beach at low tide on the Oregon Coast, its striated rock faces streaked with white mineral deposits and capped with a thin fringe of green vegetation. Scattered boulders cluster at its base and smaller stacks dot the shoreline behind it, the whole scene flattened beneath a heavy overcast sky.

Low tide on the Oregon Coast. The sea stacks have been slowly losing this argument with the ocean for a few million years, but they're not ready to admit it yet.

Low tide exposing rocks on Bushy Beach, New Zealand. Area protected for the endangered Hoiho, or Yellow-eyed penguin, so no one is allowed on the beach after 3:00PM. Hoiho penguins come onto shore after spending the day feeding amongst seals and the endangered Korora, or Little Blue penguins, that live just around the opposite bend.
