Kudus make history as Cup goes to the Coast  FNB Kudus made history on Saturday when they won their first-ever Rugby Premier League title with a stunning 50-32 victory against FNB Wanderers.  Walvis Bay Rugby Club had previously won the title twice, in 1975 when they shared the trophy with Wanderers and two years later when they were the sole champions, and now 50 years later, the cup once again returns to the coast after an epic final against Wanderers.  Kudus’ young flyhalf Michael Koopman was the player of the match scoring two opportunistic tries and adding 12 points with the boot for a personal tally of 22 points, but it was a great team effort with their forwards matching Wanderers’ powerful pack up front, backed up by some tigerish defence. In a frantic start to the match, Kudus made the first blow when wing Lucio Isaacs went over in the corner for a converted try but Wanderers immediately struck back when Danco Burger powered his way over the line. Burger, however, missed the conversion and Wanderers squandered several more points as only one of their six tries were eventually converted.  Koopman kept Kudus’ scoreboard ticking with his accurate boot, but Wanderers remained ahead with tries by Nandivatu Karuuombe and Ray-Eez Feris. Kudus, however, went 18-15 ahead when Justin Newman went over for a try and from then on they never looked back. Koopman scored his first try, showing a fine turn of speed and cutting through the backline to dive over and when Rayshawn Shoombe caught Wanderers’ defence napping after a quick tap penalty, the coastal outfit had surged into a 30-15 lead by halftime. Kudus maintained the momentum when Koopman jinxed his way over from a tap penalty and although Wanderers replied with a try by Johnny Mwenyo, Kudus went 44-20 ahead when Ja-Tamson van der Berg crashed over. Wanderers struck back with late tries by Edward Drotsky and Adriaan Booysen but Kudus’ substitute back Aurelio Plato stretched their lead with two penalties to clinch a historic victory amidst emotional scenes of jubilation and tears of joy. Kudus players and supporters celebrate with the cup. Photo: Helge Schütz Kudus eighth man Ja-Tamson van der Berg said, “We gave it our all and I’m proud of the boys. Everyone contributed to this success and I also want to thank our fans who came out to support us. “I never doubted that we would win. We did the necessary video sessions and we did the graft on the practice field – we did everything we could to get this far. Kudus have never had two teams in the final; I think it’s a very big thing for the team and the fans, and they will remember it for the rest of their lives,” he said. Wanderers coach Darryl de la Harpe said, “It was a good game and the spectators enjoyed it obviously, but to be honest, I was not happy with the refereeing. Our boys gave it their all, but they didn’t deserve a penalty count like this against them. We couldn’t play rugby, we couldn’t get into our stride, but congratulations to Kudus, they deserved to win.” It was a great day for Kudus as they also won the Reserve League trophy after beating Unam II 49-41 earlier on Saturday. Clash of the Ages as Wanderers meet Kudus A clash of the ages lies in store tomorrow when FNB Wanderers and FNB Kudus battle it out for the Rugby Premier League trophy at the Hage Geingob Stadium. The defending champions Wanderers enter the match as the favourites, as it is their fourth consecutive final, while it’s the first time since Namibia’s independence that Kudus have reached the final. Wanderers have won two of the last three titles, while they are the most successful club since Namibia’s independence in 1990 with 12 titles. They have also been the form team this season as they swept all aside in the league, winning all eight of their matches with a total score of 439 points for and 120 against, or at an average of 54-15 per match. They only met Kudus once in the league, winning a tough encounter 28-10 at Walvis Bay last month, while they go into the final off last weekend’s comprehensive 39-14 victory against United in the semis. Kudus, on the other hand, lost two matches in the league, the other one being a narrow 32-31 defeat to United, but they finished well clear of the rest of the pack in second place. They had to overcome a strong challenge in their semifinal last weekend before beating Grootfontein 32-27, but have now reached the final for the first time and will be highly motivated to create more history. Wanderers’ director of rugby Dirk Human said they are expecting a tough battle. “We know that Kudus is a well-balanced side and they also performed well this year; they had a tough battle against Grootfontein last weekend and just narrowly won, so I expect the same against us in the final. “It will be interesting to see how Kudus handle the pressure of being in the final for the first time. I think we are a bit better prepared and more used to it, if you consider that we’ve reached the final for the past few years and are also the defending champions. But we take nothing away from Kudus, and obviously, we still have to pitch and do our part, and hopefully, the plan we have and its execution will work out well. So good luck to Kudus as well and may the best team win,” he added. Human said they have made a few changes to their team but it’s mostly the same as their semifinal line-up. “We’ve got a few changes but the majority of the team stays the same. Luckily we don’t have serious injuries except for our two props Joshwin (Solomon) and Jayden (van Zyl) who are still doubtful. We will take a look at tonight’s practice and make a decision, but they will play from the bench in any case.” “The starting 15 is the same except for Danie van der Merwe who comes in at 13 with Nandi (Karuuombe) moving to the wing at 14, replacing Owen (Havenga) who will go to the bench. Rainier (Augustyn) is also back on the bench after he couldn’t play for the past two weeks, so the rest of the guys are fit to go and I believe we are ready for the final,” he said. Kudus could not be reached for comment, but their secretary Wilfred Muller has previously said that confidence is high in the Kudus camp, and they can definitely expect strong support from their faithful travelling fans. The Premier League final kicks off at 15h45 and will be preceded by the Reserve League final, between FNB Kudus 2 and FNB Unam 2 at 14h00, while the day’s activities will start with the women’s final between FNB Unam Steenbokkies and Trustco United Gemsbokkies at 12h30. Wanderers and Kudus to battle for the crown  FNB Wanderers and FNB Kudus will battle it out for the 2025 Rugby Premier League title after winning two tough semifinal enounters on Saturday.  Wanderers ground out a 39-14 win against arch-rivals Trustco United, while Kudus had to withstand a strong forward onslaught to beat FNB Grootfontein 32-27.  The results underlined their Premier League form as Wanderers remained unbeaten to top the log, while Kudus lost just two matches to finish second.  It’s the first time that Kudus have reached the final, after being knocked out in the semis over the past two years, and their captain PJ Walters was ecstatic after the win.  “This is history in the making – it’s the first time that Kudus have reached the final and I have to say it’s an awesome feeling. “Grootfontein really came at us and they made it a tough battle at the park today, but I just want to say kudos to the boys for coming out and giving their all just to pull it throught to the last game,” he added. “I have to say a very big thank you to the Kudus community from Walvis Bay. They support us in numbers and I have to say it’s an honour to play for the Blue Team, So I just want to say thank you to each and every fan out there for supporting us today,” Walters said.  In the first semifinal, Grootfontein won the forward battle, but their goalkicking was poor as they squandered eight points through missed conversions. Grootfontein took an early lead when lock Myles Mudabeti charged over from a maul, but Kudus went ahead with Zwandre Viviers barging over and Michael Koopman converting to take a 7-5 lead. Mudabeti scored his second try from a forward maul, but Kudus pulled 17-10 ahead when Aston Mukwilongo snapped up a loose ball to touch down.  Grootfontein were right back when Pieter Daniel Kok rounded off a forward maul, but a rampaging solo try by Ja-Tamson van der Berg converted by Koopman gave Kudus a 24-15 lead at half time.  The sides exchanged tries through Grootfontein captain Wicus Jacobs and Kudus flanker Franco Vries, but Grootfontein edged into a 34-32 lead after getting two penalty tries due to pressure on Kudus’ tryline.  A Koopman penalty and Mukwilongo’s second try, however, put Kudus clear at 42-34 before Rudi Pretorius added a late penalty for Grootfontein.  In the second semi, United provided a stern test but Wanderers forward power and incisive backline attacks gave them a comfortable win in the end.  Wanderers flyhalf Danco Burger barged over for an early try and when eighthman Adriaan Booysen touched down they went 12-0 ahead.  JD Nel opened United’s account with a converted try, before the sides exchanged tries through Jurgen Meyer and Johan Brockmann as Wanderers went into halftime leading 19-14.  United tried hard to get back into the game but Wanderers steadily pulled away with further tries by JP Campbell and Edward Drotsky to win by 15 points.  Wanderers coach Darryl de la Harpe said they were not as clinical as they could have been.  “I think we gave a good performance, especially in first half, we had good physicality, but we also left a lot of tries out there, we weren’t as clinical as we wanted to be. “But, you know, playing not so well and still winning by that margin says a lot about the team, I think they showed a lot of character. We’ll take the win and now we prepare for Kudus in the final,” he said.  De la Harpe said he was proud of how their young players came through. “We tested our depth and I’m just very proud of these young boys, like JP Campbell, coming through from the u20s and just being exceptional and slotting in very well. And then under the leadership of Skroef (Ruan Ludick) and Jacques Theron, I can only be happy. “Joe Losper is another yongster that’s putting up his hand and hopefully he’ll get a shot at higher honours in the near future,” he added.  The post Wanderers and Kudus to battle for the crown  appeared first on The Namibian.

Last four standing  The Namibian Rugby Premier League heads towards its culmination at the Hage Geingob Stadium tomorrow when the remaining four semifinalists battle it out for a place in the final.  FNB Kudus take on FNB Grootfontein in the first semi at 14h30, while FNB Wanderers take on Trustco United at 16h15.  With former national u20 coach Roger Thompson taking over as director of rugby this year, Kudus have developed into a formidable side that only lost two matches througout the season. That was a narrow 32-31 defeat to United on 5 April and a 27-10 defeat to Wanderers on 17 May, while they beat Grootfontein 33-27 in their league encounter on 3 May.  Kudus narrowly missed out on the final over the past two years and are highly motivated to make it count this time, according to their secretary Wilfried Muller: “Confidence is surging through the Kudus camp as we finalize preparations for our crucial semi-final clash this Saturday. Despite facing significant hurdles, the team believes they are perfectly positioned to surpass last season’s achievements and secure a coveted spot in the final in the premier league,” he said.  “The journey to the semi-finals hasn’t been without disruption. Holiday periods presented unexpected training challenges, but the commitment of the Kudus squad shone through with many players balancing demanding work schedules in companies operating through the holidays,” he added.  The team will be without their inspirational captain Cameron Langenhoven and influential flyhalf Kyle Wentzel who are both injured, but they have been bolstered by the return of halfback Michael Koopman from work commitments and Muller said they are highly motivated for the match.  “This weekend is a moment of immense pride for our entire club. We’ve overcome disruptions and key absences through depth; the boys have trained well, the belief is tangible and we are ready to go a step further,” he said.  Grootfontein clinched their semifinal place after beating Rehoboth 41-39 last weekend and captain Wicus Jacobs said it was the perfect preparation for the semis.  “The game was a thriller, Rehoboth came for us from the start and the lead changed throughout. They played very well, they played as if it was a quarterfinal so I take my hat off for them. They gave a great performance and provided us an opportunity to prepare well for this weekend’s game, and show us where there are still errors and what we need to improve,” he said.  “We have two injuries – AJ Vercuil broke his ankle last weekend and Justin Pollman broke his collarbone, but besides that we are at full strength. We respect Kudus and I think its going to be a great game. They play a very similar game to us, so in the end it will be about which team executes their forward facets andgame plan the best,” he added.  Wanderers will start as favourites against United, after remaining unbeaten throughout the season and finishing well clear of the chasing pack at the top of the log.  United on the other hand won four and lost four of their league matches, while they just scraped into the semis. Wanderers, however, bring out the best in their traditional rivals and despite losing their league encounter 47-24 on 10 May, United pushed Wanderers all the way.   Wanderers coach Dirk Human said they are well prepared and looking forward to the encounter.  “We are very excited, but a semi is another ball-game altogether, so we will be tested thoroughly and I think it will be a different United team to the one that we beat in the derby,” he said.   “The spirit is high, our preparations have gone well and I think we are ready for the onslaught and hopefully we can make the final,” he added.   Wanderers will be strengthened by the return of Adriaan Booysen and Jacques Theron, who were rested last weekend, but they still have a few injury concerns according to Human. “Danie van der Merwe is still out with a niggling injury, and we must assess Denzo Bruwer who is out with a knee injury, and Kian Bayer who is also out, but we are very excited that Liam Compion has recovered, so he’ll be back in the starting line-up,” he said.   The Premier Luegue semis will be preceded by the Reserve League semis with Wanderers II taking on Kudus II at 11h00, while Unam II take on Dolphins II at 12h45.  The post Last four standing  appeared first on The Namibian.

Unam pipped to the post in dramatic run-in  FNB Unam lost the battle for a semifinal place in the Namibia Rugby Premier League after losing a thriller 40-39 to FNB Kudus on Saturday.  With Trustco United beating FNB Dolphins 59-28 at Swakopmund, and FNB Grootfontein beating FNB Rehoboth 41-39 at home, they secured the final two semifinal spots and will now join FNB Wanderers and Kudus in next weekend’s semifinals.  Kudus had already qualified for the semifinals, but they surprised Unam with an impassioned performance at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday.  They took an early lead when left wing Lucio Isaacs dived over in the corner with Rayshown Schoombe converting, and despte Aljarreau Zaahl opening Unam’s account with a penalty, Kudus kept on attacking and went 14-3 ahead when Isaacs went over for his second try.  Unam suffered a setback when their captain Rowan Jansen was stretchered off after a forward collision but they fought back bravely and reduced the gap to 14-10 when flanker Viery Haufiku went over for a converted try.  Kudus eighthman Ja-Tamson van der Berg, however, crashed over from a maul and with Shoombe adding the conversion they went into halftime with a 21-10 lead.  Unam came out firing after the break, with Duhan Bezuidenhout going over from a maul, and when Brandon Dentlinger turned on the pace to touch down, they were finally in the lead at 22-21. Zaahl missed Dentlinger’s conversion, hitting the post, and two more conversion attempts that hit the post ultimately proved costly.  Tries at either end by Kudus centre Justin Newman and Isaacs’ third, and Zaahl and Dentlinger for Unam put Kudus 33-32 ahead, before Kudus winger Aston Muukwilongo turned on the pace to go over and with Shoombe converting they went 40-32 ahead.  Unam struck back with a late try by Shaun van Wyk, converted by Delron Brandt, but it was not enough as Kudus held on for a dramatic win.  The defeat put an end to Unam’s semifinal hopes, but Alcino Isaacs, who took over the captaincy from Jansen, was a gracious loser.  “It was a very tough game, but congrats to Kudus, they really came out firing. They put their hands on our throats, but congrats to my boys, we stuck in it the whole 80 minutes and I think the crowd enjoyed one hell of a game.” “I must say we were definitely surprised by Kudus’ onslaught. We thought they would be gassed in the second half, but the boys wouldn’t stop. They stayed in the fight and I guess we just couldn’t get that final blow in,” he added.  Isaacs said it was a bitter pill to swallow.  “It’s a tough one. It’s been years since Unam didnt make a semifinal. I guess it’s a learning stage for us again, so we just need to regroup and build from this,” he said. Kudus eighthman Ja-Tamson van der Bergh congratulated his team mates on a great performance.  “I want to say thank you to all the fans who came out to support us today. It  wasn’t easy, Unam pitched up today, they wanted a place in the semifinals, but it didn’t go their way and I think our boys did a great job,” he said.  Kudus will now face Grootfontein in next weekend’s semifinal and Van der Berg said they are highly motivated.   “We are very positive, I think this is Kudus’ year. We’re going to go out with everything we’ve got and give it our best shot.” Grootfontein secured their semifinal spot after a thrilling 41-39 win against Rehoboth on their home turf.  They got maximum bonus points after scoring seven tries through Lorenzo Louis, Rudi Pretorius, Dhaamin Bassardien, Johan Luttig, Oliver Mouton, Wicus Jacobs and Nelius Theron, while Pretorius added three conversions.  For Rehoboth, Miquel Busch scored three tries, and Dolano Vries and Keynnen Basson one each, while Franklin Busch added four conversions and two penalties.  United also got maximum bonus points after scoring nine tries in their 59-28 win against Dolphins. Captain JD Nel scored three, and Jandre Esterhuizen, Keenan Januarie, DJ Holtzhausen, Dandre Schreuder, Thehard Lintvelt and Enrique Husselmann one each, while Husselmann added seven conversions for a personal tally of 19 points.  Dolphins scored four tries through Jerome Schumann (two), Cameron Marcus and Sheiton Besser, while Sammy Poulton converted all four.  Wanderers, meanwhile, completed an unbeaten league season with an impressive 78-21 victory againsty Suburbs. Their captain Danco Burger had a field day scoring three tries and seven conversions for a personal tally of 29 points, while Jurgen Meyer scored four tries, Tareekuye Tjipute two, and Nandivatu Karuuombe, Joe Losper and JP Campbell one each, while Johnny Mwenyo added two conversions.  For Suburbs, Simon Gosscky scored two tries and Richard Mupewa one, with Geraldo Beukes converting all three.  The post Unam pipped to the post in dramatic run-in  appeared first on The Namibian.

Battle for knock-out stages intensifies  The battle for semifinal places in the Namibian Rugby Premier League intensifies this weekend with some crucial matches in store tomorrow.  FNB Wanderers, who lead the log on 28 points, and second-placed FNB Kudus on 24, seem assured of reaching the semifinals but the other two spots are still up for grabs, with Trustco United (17), FNB Grootfontein (16), FNB Unam (12), FNB Western Suburbs (11) and FNB Rehoboth (11) all still in the hunt.  Wanderers have been in imperious form this season, winning all their matches to date, and will start as firm favourites when they host United in their annual derby at the Wanderers ground.  Wanderers captain Jacques Theron acknowledged that they are the favourites but said they will not rest on their laurels. “We’ve had a great start to the season, we are four points ahead of Kudus at the top of the log, so it’s a lead, but it’s not where we want to be yet. We are the favourites, but a derby is a derby and anything can happen, so we’re trying to prepare as if it’s our first game of the season and were going to give it our all,” he said.  He certainly has a point as derbies traditionally bring out the best in both teams.  Last season United didn’t even reach the semifinal play-offs, but after losing 31-15 to Wanderers in their first round encouner, they nearly beat their old foes in their return leg encounter at Wanderers, before going down 18-15.  Despite Wanderers’ success in recent years, United still hold the upper hand over their archrivals in their traditional derby which dates back 69 years. Since their first derby in 1956, United have won 34 matches and Wanderers 31, while four have been drawn. On paper, Wanderers have a powerful squad with depth and quality, while competition for places in the starting line-up will be intense.  Amongst the backs Theron and Denzo Bruwer form a potent halfback pair, while they have speed aplenty out wide in players like Jurgens Meyer, Johnny Mwenyo, Owen Hawanga and Danie van der Merwe.  Up front they have experienced national players like Ruan Ludick and Adriaan Booysen, while upcoming players like Sheron Rossouw, Joe Losper and Kian Beyer have also impressed this season.  United on the other hand are in a rebuilding phase with a young team and few stars, but players like captain JD Nel, Ricardo Swartz and Christo Gresse amongst the backs, and Thehard Lintvelt, Feddy Mazila and Zander Bronkhorst amongst the forwards have caught the eye. United, however, will still be without their inspirational flyhalf Hanreco van Zyl, who tore his hamstring against Western Suburbs a month ago. Another exciting showdown can be expected at the Unam field where Unam host Rehoboth. There’s not much to choose between the two sides, with only a point separating them on the log, while both are hitting form and coming off victories last weekend.  Unam have had an indifferent start to the league but last weekend finished strongly to beat Falcons 31-18, while Rehoboth beat United 38-28 on their home field. Tomorrow’s encounter will be crucial to both teams’ title aspirations and a humdinger can be expected. Grootfontein will be determined to get their campaign back on track after a 33-27 defeat to Kudus last weekend, and will be aiming for maximum bonus points when they take on bottom of the log FNB Dolphins at Swakopmund.  Dolphins are still in search of their first win this season, but are slowly making progress in only their second season in the Premier League.  Kudus will start as favourites against FNB Reho Falcon, who are out of the running for the semis, but they should not be underestimated. Last week they pushed Unam all the way before fading in the last 10 minutes, and in front of their Rehoboth supporters they could be a tough nut to crack. Unam back on track FNB Unam got their Rugby Premier League campaign back on track with a 31-18 victory against Reho Falcons on Saturday, to revive their hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the competition. There were also wins for FNB Kudus, FNB Western Suburbs and FNB Rehoboth as the battle for semifinal spots intensifies.  At the HTS field Unam received stiff resistance from Falcons, but eventually ran out comfortable winners, scoring five tries to zero.  In a scrappy first half, Ashton van Wyk put Falcons 6-0 ahead with two penalties, but Unam opened their account when Don Juan Beukes broke blind from a scrum to race clear, and with Aljarreau Zaal adding the conversion they went 7-6 ahead.  Falcons were penalised with Mike Eliaser and Zaino van Wyk both receiving yellow cards for foul play, but they defended courageously and regained the lead through another Van Wyk penalty early in the second half.  Unam upped the tempo after the break and went ahead after tries by fullback Davitho van Wyk and winger Quirione Majiedt, but Ashton van Wyk kept Falcons in touch with his booming boot and with 10 minutes to go the result was still wide open with Unam leading 19-15.  Unam, however, pulled away with two more tries by Cameron Klassen and Rowan Jansen in the final minutes to run out comfortable winners. The result put Unam right back in the title race in fifth place on the log on 12 points – four behind Grootfontein, but with a game in hand.  Unam captain Jansen was not very happy with their performance.  “It was a very rough start to the game – the first half was just stop and start all the time, there were a lot of knock-ons, a lot of scrums and lineouts, and lots of disciplinary issues from both teams that had to be sorted out,” he said.  “It really spoiled the quality of the game from both teams – we have to improve on that and it could have been a very good game if everyone was just a bit more disciplined. But in the second half my team came through strongly and we finished the game off well,” he added. Jansen said they need to improve a lot if they hope to make an impact this season.  “We’ve had a rough start to the season and we have a lot of things to sort out in our camp. So far we have three losses and two wins, so we have a long way to go and we have to improve on that,” he said.  Kudus, meanwhile, moved to within four points of log leaders FNB Wanderers with a hard-fought 33-27 away win against FNB Grootfontein.  Irongwa Atshivudhi scored a hattrick of tries, and Rayshawn Shoombe and Tonderai Ndudzo one try each, while Kyle Wentzel added three conversions and Shoombe one.  For Grootfontein, captain Wicus Jacobs scored three tries, all converted by Uroel Marais, who also added two penalties.  The result leaves Kudus second on 24 points, while Grootfontein remain fourth on 16.  Trustco United remain third on the log on 17 points, despite suffering a 38-28 defeat way to Rehoboth, who are now seventh on 11 points.  Manfred Garoeb scored a hattrick of tries for Rehoboth and Miquel Busch and Keynnen Basson one each, while Franklin Busch converted all five and added a penalty for a personal tally of 13 points. Top four pull away  The top four teams in the Namibia Rugby Premier League opened up a sizable gap on the rest of field after the fifth round of matches on Saturday. FNB Wanderers maintained their unbeaten status with a 29-0 win away to FNB Rehoboth to move up to 28 points at the top of the log, while FNB Kudus thumped FNB Western Suburbs 50-15 at Walvis Bay to go second on 19 points.  Trustco United overcame a spirited FNB Reho Falcon 45-31 to go third on 16 points, while FNB Grootfontein are fourth on 15 points after beating FNB Unam 37-20 at home.  Unam and Suburbs now trail eight points behind Grootfontein on seven points each, while Rehoboth (6), Reho Falcon (5) and FNB Dolphins (0) make up the rear.  At the United field, Falcons pushed United all the way, with the result in the balance till the closing stages.  United took an early lead through a try by Christo Gresse, converted by Ricardo Swartz, and went 12-0 ahead when Zander Bronkhorst went over from a maul.  Falcons opened their account with a try by Thomas Kali, but United went 19-5 ahead after Kamaa Kajau crashed over from a forward maul.  Falcons made a determined comeback with Dillon Kahmann cutting through the backline to score with Ashton van Wyk converting, and when both kickers added a penalty, United held a 22-15 lead going into halftime.  Swartz and Van Wyk traded penalties in the second half and with United leading 28-24 the game was still wide open.  Falcons bashed away at United’s defence, but were caught on the counter-attack when United centre JD Nel ran 70m clear to score a converted try as United pulled 35-24 ahead.  Falcons narrowed the deficit to 35-31 when flanker Marthinus Nekundi went over for a fine solo try, but United had the final say through a converted try by Callie Swanepoel, while Swartz added a late penalty.  United coach Robbie Dickson said he was satisfied with their performance.  “It was a good game and Reho Falcon really played well. We failed to exit a couple of times and gave them ball to run at us. We know they are dangerous when they do that, and there were a couple of mistakes on our side but overall I’m happy with the performance. I think our kicking was good from the tee and our defence was also good, so I’m happy with the result,” he said.  “We will just take it game by game and try and qualify for the semifinals,” he added.  Wanderers, meanwhile, recorded their fifth consecutive win with a 29-0 away to Rehoboth. Wanderers scored five tries through Danco Burger (two), Danie van der Merwe, Jacques Theron and Joe Losper, while Johnny Mwenyo added two conversions.  Kudus picked up maximum bonus points after scoring seven tries against Suburbs.  Justin Newman and Lucio Isaacs scored two tries each, and PJ Walters, Cameron Langenhoven and Zwandre Viviers one each, while Michael Koopman added four conversions and a penalty, and Kyle Wentzel two conversions.  Suburbs scored two tries through Delano van Wyk and Ethan Beukes, while Bronwon Willemse added a conversion and a penalty.  Grootfontein scored five tries in their win against Unam through Lasarus Joseph, Rudi Pretorius, Johannes Luttig, Wicus Jacobs and Oliver Mouton, while Uroel Marais added 12 points with the boot.  Unam scored three tries through Alcino Isaac, Shareave Titus and Don Beukes, while Aljarreau Zaahl added a conversion and Davitho van Wyk a penalty.  The post Top four pull away  appeared first on The Namibian.

The battle is on in Rugby Premier League  With the Rugby Premier League at about the halfway stage before the knockout stages begin, the battle is on for a place in the semifinals. FNB Wanderers are way ahead of the pack on 23 points and certain to reach the knockout stages, but the battle for the other three semifinal spots is still wide open. FNB Kudus are second on 13 points, followed by Trustco United (11), FNB Grootfontein (10), FNB Unam and FNB Western Suburbs on seven points each, FNB Rehoboth (6) and FNB Reho Falcons (5). Only bottom-of-the-log FNB Dolphins (0) seem to be out of the running, although they still have a mathematical chance to make the top four. The Wanderers machine travels south to take on Rehoboth tomorrow and will start as firm favourites to make it five wins in a row. They have accumulated 257 points and conceded 65 so far, at an aggregate of 66-16 per game, and with their powerful pack and hard running backs will provide a huge challenge for the home side. Rehoboth coach Jackey Bock however said they are well prepared and hoping to cause an upset. “We’ve had a couple of good sessions and finalised the team early so the guys are settled and very excited about the challenge against Wanderers.  “It will be a huge task because Wanderers have very good structures and nearly 90% of their players are in the national side, but we will give it our best shot and I also have a few tricks up my sleeve,” he said.  Kudus host Western Suburbs and a humdinger could be in store, with both teams eager to get back to winning ways. Kudus lost a thriller 32-31 to United in their last match and their secretary Wilfred Muller said they need to make a statement after their defeat to United.  “The players have been working hard and the team is gelling nicely now. The players know they have to make a strong comeback now because if we lose it will make the road to the semis much more difficult. Wanderers have built up a big gap at the top so we need to reduce it,” he said.  Suburbs had a great start to the season, winning their opening two matches against Unam and Grootfontein under new coach Jood Opperman, but since then they’ve unravelled a bit, losing to Rehoboth and United. Besides that they were also deducted three points for fielding unregistered players against Unam, while they will be without Opperman who is currently with the national u20 team in Zimbabwe. Opperman yesterday, however, said that the team is well prepared and ready for the match.  “I haven’t been with the team for a week now but I’ll have a teleconference call with the assistant coaches tonight to tie up some loose ends. But our players are ready for the game, and I trust and believe that they will be motivated and have the right attitude for the game. “We are expecting a very physical and tactical game, because their coach Roger Thompson is a highly respected coach and he is very clinical on the various facets of the game, so we must just make sure that we execute well and get points when we are in their territory.  “I’m expecting a hard match – both teams have got strong packs of forwards and good backline players, but Kudus are definitely the favourites and we will start as the underdogs.  “The players that I select and send in to battle must know that I expect a lot of them and they must just give their best. Our aim is to finish in the top four and we hope that the men will put up a good show at the coast,” he said. Trustco United host Reho Falcon, who will be in confident mood after they beat Rehoboth 25-21 in their last match a fortnight.  United should start as the favourites on their home turf, but head coach Robbie Dickson said they will not underestimate Falcons.  “We are looking forward to the game this weekend, and we’ve put a lot of work in since our last game against Suburbs. We’ve spent a lot of time on our set-pieces especially the scrums and the lineouts; and we’ve been working hard on fitness and our defensive and attacking structures.  “It’s going to be a very hard game against Falcons, they always give their best when they come to United, but we are looking forward to the match and hope to win it,” he said.  Unam, meanwhile, travel north to take on Grootfontein in another match that could go down to the wire. Fourth-placed Grootfontein currently lead Unam  by three points on the log, but the students have a game in hand and a win could be a vital boost for their stop-start campaign so far.
