Rundu mother in court over newborn’s death
A woman (35) from Rundu has been arrested and appeared in court for allegedly killing and burying her newborn at her homestead at Mazana village at Rundu earlier this month.
Kavango East crime investigations coordinator deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu says the incident took place on 17 April.
“A mother of 35 years gave birth to a baby girl at Rundu State Hospital on 15 April.
“Upon her discharge she went home to Mazana village with her healthy baby,” he says.
Kanyetu says the mother buried the baby’s body in a shallow grave near her homestead.
“She failed to inform anyone or to report the death to the police,” he says.
Kanyetu says the body was exhumed on Thursday after a tip-off from the public.
“The body of the infant was taken to Rundu State Hospital’s mortuary pending postmortem, and a case of murder and defeating the course of justice is being investigated,” Kanyetu says.
He says the mother has been arrested and appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
