Despite unified Republican opposition, Senate Bill 36 is now officially state law… furthering New Mexico’s ‘Sanctuary Status’ for criminal illegal immigrants.

With a vote of 96-70, the Georgia State House voted under the cover of darkness tonight to pass #RFRA. If signed into law by Gov Kemp, #SB36 will be used to justify discrimination in public health, child welfare and adoption, marriage, employment, and more under so-called religious freedom. 16/16
Rep Evans saying the quiet part out loud— #SB36 is bad for business, the only thing Georgia Republicans seem to care about. “States that have passed this law have lost business, tourism, the games and events that we all love to go to because young people don’t like this law.” 13/x
“This bill poses significant risks to the rights and freedoms of far too many Georgians.” - Rep Inga Willis on #SB36.
We know that no matter what we look like or who we love, our communities are stronger when we are free to be our authentic selves, work together, and show up for each other. 7/x
“I rise to oppose #SB36. I grew up in Catholicism and it has been a wellspring of how to treat people... While we are allowed to believe as we choose, we have to respect the way that others believe and not impose our values on others, especially when it causes harm.” - Rep Marvin Lim on #RFRA. 4/x
“If this bill is about stopping religious discrimination, then why were amendments to ban discrimination repeatedly rejected?” - @ruwaromman.bsky.social pointing out the hypocrisy of #SB36 and the Georgia GOP's so-called religious freedom bill. 3/x
“We cannot keep messing with people’s lives like this.” - @ruwaromman.bsky.social speaking powerfully about the role government ought to play in our lives compared to the role this Georgia General Assembly actually plays with bills like #SB36 that provide a license to discriminate. 2/x
RIGHT NOW: RFRA is on the floor of the Georgia State House–this bill claims to protect freedom of religion, a right already guaranteed by the First Amendment. #SB36 actually provides a license to discriminate against people of faith, LGBTQ+ Georgians, women, and more. 1/x
The cited SCOTUS case in #SB36 ruled that the federal RFRA only applies federally. The case was a church that said they should be allowed to build in a historic district because they needed a bigger church. Not allowing them was a violation.
Great intentions behind this bill.
GA SB 36, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, has passed the Senate and is headed for the House. It would create an avenue for ppl and businesses (Hobby Lobby 2014) to legally discriminate based on race, gender, sexuality etc. and drive business from our state. Plz call your Reps today! #SB36
GA Senate GOP voted down a bill to give Georgia our own Civil Rights Act, citing its passage would bring "unintended consequences".
GA Senate Dems fought against the passage of "The Hateful Heart" RFRA #SB36 and will continue to fight to bring Georgia into the 21st century.
The GA GOP just passed a bill out of committee legalizing religious discrimination. #SB36
Senate Dems introduced an amendment to codify the civil rights act in Georgia. Every Republican voted against it. #gapol
