Light and dark fantasy are a matter of tone for me. It's like LOTR vs. Conan. Though Conan doesn't go as far as many dark fantasies do.
#WritingCommunity #ReadingCommunity #WriteSky
Dark for me means the world is bleak and (almost) hopeless, the characters are shades of grey, no traditional heroes/heroines, there are some violent, grim scenario, and the stakes are high. #sffchat
Hi Lady Crow here!
An SFF fan from Southeast Asia who loves to buddy read and always have too many in her TBR.
My favourite dance style to watch is hip hop & modern dance. I love exciting choreography that makes me want to dance or beautiful/ moving choreo that makes me shed some tears. #sffchat
#SFFChat Q4
Not dark. I write bad stuff happening and I've got some characters with appalling backstories, but my plots all highlight movement toward good/ reason. Aesthetically, there's too much friendship and people cooking food. Whe you find ruins in my settings, they're there to bring depth
#SFFChat Q3
MBotF is the darkest series I've read. Unless we count the Illiad. Still angry about the Illiad. And I'd like to tag Homer and say so!
As for the former, I'm glad I read them, it was a wild ride. My tolerance for tragedy is very low, tho, esp lately. I need bad guys to face consequences
#SFFChat Q4
I prefer to keep mine on the lighter side. I’ll happily have chapters that dip into the heavier emotional darkside, but I want these books to be a story for roughly everyone* with the focus on the fantastical whimsy and adventure
*due to Content Warnings, book is rated 18+
#SFFChat Q2
Ngl, I have never heard this term used. Is it a cousin to cozy? Or are we in high fantasy/ bathed in the light of the stars territory here?
#SFFChat Q3
Phantom Toll Booth, that book specifically is a dark one because of how heavy it is. I don’t remember who wrote it
I see @voicesofvalhoon.bsky.social as a lighthearted writer as theirs is the only new book I’ve read in years
#SFFChat Q1
... dang. I can make a list of books, but what unites them? It's not just the presence of gore and evil, but these things existing in a world where villains win and there are rarely consequences. Anyone who tries to stand up and make a difference just gets mowed down as a matter of
#SFFChat Q2
Light would be what I’m used to. Elder Scrolls, Halo, Isekai like Log Horizon or Overlord. More focused on the obvious fight ahead, problems can be solved without causing a mental breakdown or existential crisis
#SFFChat
Missed the chat. Bummer! I'm Jeremy, I write fantasy, I can't dance to save my fucking life, and altho I hugely enjoy watching anyone do anything they're good at and enthusiastic about, breakdancing obviously.
#SFFChat Q1
Dark tells me it’s emotionally heavy/charged, likely contains heavy descriptions of emotional/mental torment/anguish. Content is more focused on challenging moral compasses with “Lesser of two evils” choices

Name’s Emil Bronze, I’m a soon-to-debut fantasy writer working on #HeartofOak
I’m not much of a dancer myself, but I do like swing dancing
#SFFChat I never make it on time😭 but I so bad want to share, so I'm doing it. I'll also bookmark to check out others' excepts.
Bonus snippet in reply.
Almost everything I write could be called bittersweet, for the happiness & sweetness make the loss & sadness hit so much harder.

#SFFChat Intro:
Hi I'm Simon. I write mostly #spicy #scifi and some not so spicy, and I dabble in #epic #fantasy.
My favorite dance style is ballroom dancing. I'm not so good at it, but my MC Ariana is. Her fave song is Clair de lune by the French composer Claude Debussy. She likes to waltz to it.
#SFFChat Q4:
I keep trying to upload a picture, but BS keeps timing out.
Lamia is darker than Sigils, but I'd say Sigils of Blight would fall in the middle, while Sigils of Malice is a bit lighter.
#SFFChat Q3:
@sgwolfeauthor.bsky.social is more sci-fi, but he does write fantasy on rare occasion.
Bad things happen in his books (like training accidents), but he also has an extensive knowledge of raising goats! I'd describe Simon as Star Trek inspired erotica.
#SFFChat Q2:
Cozy, perhaps? Your inn run by a witch and her orc girlfriend kind of stories. The space adventure where a colony is stranded and needs to make ends meet, but it never goes Lord of the Flies or Subnautica.
Both are good.
#SFFChat Q1:
Dark fantasy is fantasy where you may lose a favorite character, where terrible real world topics and politics may be explored in brutal ways, and there's a risk you may not get a happy ending.
There's room for light, coziness and hope in dark fantasy. I've read plenty of...

My name is Rebecca Reyes, an author of science fiction and science fantasy.
I don't have a favorite dance style, but if I could learn to dance, I'd love salsa!💃 Young or old, everyone is hot when they salsa!
Dark fantasy is my playground. To me, it represents a space that we can inject a little metaphorical distance and explore the darker sides of the human condition and the systems we build without getting…defensive.

I’m Ron, and I’m editing my YA Post-nuclear war novel, Making Utopia. I also wrote two short stories. My genres are horror, scifi and fantasy.
Dance wise, the closest would be the Cumbia. It’s a dance I did for my friend’s quinceanera. I honestly haven’t done it in 15 years.

#SFFChat A4:
I'd say ... more to the dark. My post apocalyptic novels are obviously not lighthearted.
But in my novels [every genre], I write about honest things. Good behaviour of people, but also cruel. NSFW stuff and gore, depression, self harm.
No sugar coating. #WritingCommunity #BookSky

My work is all over the place. I freely describe StS as dark fantasy, but Prophecies is an emotionally complex satire with jokes along with scary moments. Grinks & Co. is lighthearted, with people being happy through almost the entire thing.
Check out my pinned post for details!

"Light" SFF isn't a term I'm as familiar with, but it suggests to me that it's relatively safe for the MCs and doesn't delve much into the more difficult human emotions. A happy ending is guaranteed, and I wouldn't expect much character growth beyond "And now I believe in myself!"
#SFFChat
To me, "dark" fiction deals largely with fear, loss, pain, violence, and/or difficult choices with no good option. The story doesn't give any assurance that things will end well for the MCs or anyone else. This can all be overdone (e.g., grimdark), but it can also be mature and cathartic.
