A female Big Bang Theory Sheldon‑type in near‑future Rio—socially miscalibrated and brilliant—tangling with quirky AIs, cosmic legends, and a romance that’s mildly chaotic, mildly funny, and mildly serious #SFFRomance #TheHeartOfDarkMatter

Sad! Yes, I gave my lizard man a hemipenis that hides behind a slit. No, I did not give him two barbed shafts.

“What are you looking at?” Lorcan growled. Zeke’s fish stared back impassively, more concerned with Lorcan’s digestibility than his frustration. It was a sleek predator of a thing, a streamlined silver bullet of teeth and venom-tipped spikes native to one of the handful of waterlogged planets within a single Portal hop of Ruverth. Its mouth opened and closed silently as it mentally calculated the circumference of Lorcan’s head from within the reinforced glass of its floor-to-ceiling aquarium. Lorcan held no illusions of survival should the thing ever manage to catch him, but for now it remained helplessly imprisoned and entirely dependent on Zeke. Just as the senior Interrogator preferred all the murder-hungry carnivores he dealt with regularly. He sighed, leaning against the glass. “I’m really not your type, am I?” No, Zeke was a man consumed by his job. Always claiming he wanted more. Always picking new variations of the same things he already had. The fish slammed against Lorcan’s shoulder in agreement, rattling the designer-selected paintings hung at strategic locations throughout Zeke’s living room. “Let’s get you fed, then.” Lorcan dropped the large bone-in steak into the scooper, tipping it into the tank and watching as the fish gnawed. “Sometimes I wish he’d just notice me,” he told the fish quietly. “When he’s not interrogating. You know? I want to be a friend at least. Not just a coworker.” The bone snapped in half. “And Aleena…” Lorcan laughed. “She could probably snap me in half with her bare hands. And you know what? I don’t think I’d mind.” He dropped the empty packaging to the coffee table, the only mess in Zeke’s meticulously unlived-in house. “Why am I like this?” he asked the fish, but it ignored him, its attention still focused on devouring the last scraps of bone and marrow dotting the tank. “They’re never going to notice me. Not like that. I need to move on.” He needed to figure out how.
Sharing an excerpt from one of my favorite chapters in my current Space Fantasy #Polyam #Romance project: Lorcan feeding Zeke's giant carnivorous fish and contemplating his romantic choices before concluding he needs to move on. (Spoiler: he doesn't).
