Grateful for the chance to attend #SOBP2025 in Toronto—learned a lot from lectures and symposia, especially on how AI might shape mental health care. Had inspiring exchanges during my poster session with colleagues from around the world. @uni-muenster.de @trr393.bsky.social @traplabms.bsky.social

My first #SOBP was awesome! There were so many great sessions where I learned about the neurobiological underpinnings of #depression and new treatments the field is adopting. Thanks to all who came by my poster #SOBP2025

One sentence that stayed with me from the #SOBP2025 fireside chat:

'Science cannot help society if it does not reflect society.'

So I finally got my Society for Biological Psychiatry travel award 🎉 I remember the feeling I had when I got award email for 2024, a mix of happiness and "ugh, not another US visa app" feeling. Funny enough, I applied and it is still processing 14 months later 😴 luckily the #SOBP2025 was in Toronto

Great job to Chris 👏
He picked one hell of a data model for his first ever poster presentation. It fit in perfectly with all of the talks I went to this week. Moral of the week… people are special, stop averaging 🥲 #SOBP2025

Lost my voice almost all the #SOBP! Could not present for my #early-career panel and my poster! #worst #SOBP2025 ever!

Several taxa have significant associations with PRS for taxa. Validated across multiple cohorts.

Microbial PRS are associated with remission to sertraline (not surviving multiple comparisons)

Host genetics affect microbiome composition. Generate polygenic risk scores for heritable taxa.

#SOBP2025

Integration of experimental models and early human experiments argued for a role of microbiome in mental health.

Microbiome is a confluence of lots of factors, including numerous environments and host genome — think about hologenomes (host+microbes)

#SOBP2025

We contain multitudes, more microbes than cells in body, so microbes have a lot of influence on us.

Microbiome is a function of host genetics and environment, so it's a good candidate for individual differences.

Microbiota-gut-brain axis. Continual crosstalk of host and microbiome

#SOBP2025

Brain is wired early, so day to day changes are probably mostly in the body, and the microbiome is a vital part of that.

Millions (trillions) of bacteria across our bodies, more similarity of regions across people than within person.

#SOBP2025

Three goals : microbiome has value. Host genetics affects microbiome. The confluence of the two influences treatment.

Lack of treatment isn't necessarily the issue as much as failure to match individuals to treatments. Who are the responders? How is the body influencing the brain?

Finally (before posters and sleep and probably some kind of zoo and then a plane), Jane Foster will talk about polygenic risk scores for heritable gut microbes predicting antidepressant response.
