Thanks to @drpetrone.bsky.social and everyone at Eastern New Mexico University for hosting Brad Peterson, Greg Metzger, and I this week! Even in the high plains, students are fascinated by sharks. It was wonderful to engage with this community. 🦈 #SOFOsharks

Another big 2024 highlight was being featured on Nat Geo alongside Greg Skomal, Megan Winton, Greg Metzger, and the #SOFOsharks team! It focused on our efforts to deploy a camera tag on a baby white shark. There really is something special about that little yellow rectangle. Available on Disney+!

New #SciArt using hi-rez PSAT data from a sand tiger shark the #SOFOsharks team tagged this year. Interesting how little time this shark spent near the surface. 🦈 πŸ¦‘ 🐟 🐑

A small spinner shark

A small spinner shark

An unexpected 2024 field season highlight was this tiny spinner shark. Caught and released near Moriches Inlet, NY, it’s the northernmost record of a YOY spinner to my knowledge. Somebody prove me wrong. 🦈 πŸ¦‘ 🐟

This year the #SOFOsharks team deployed satellite tags on seven different shark species in NY waters. We were lucky enough to recover over 60% of them, providing high resolution 3D movement data! 🦈

A spinner shark tagged with a PSAT.

Spinner sharks were historically uncommon off Long Island, NY, but they’ve become regular visitors the last several years. In collaboration with the #SOFOsharks team, we’ve tagged a bunch of them. Preliminary results currently in review.
