#MorningReads Householders in same-sex marriages were younger on average (49.0 years) than those in opposite-sex marriages (53.2), but older on average than those in same-sex unmarried (40.6) and opposite-sex unmarried (40.1) couple households. #SOGIData #CensusData
Not everything has to be framed through pathology. There's value in documenting differences in family forms among LGBTQ+ people beyond their links to adverse health aspects. #tcs #SOGIData #Q+Studies

#MorningReads This 2015 study develops the 12-item Asexuality Identification Scale (AIS), a reliable self-report tool that distinguishes asexual and sexual individuals and enables more representative research samples. #SOGIData
94% of data elements removed from federal collections were gender identity demographic measures (n=338 collections). At least 60 also removed sexual ort data elements. These actions were not explicitly mandated under Executive Order 14,168 or related implementation guidance. #SOGIData #dontcomply
#SOGIData
These changes were made largely pursuant to Executive Order 14,168. 83% of removals were made through non-substantive change requests made to OMB. Very few were changed through formal notice-and-comment process(n=34).

US surveys should integrate SOGI measures w/ detailed questions on relationships & living arrangements to better study family & health as it captures diverse family structures when surveys exclude non-coresidential partners. #SOGIData #LGBTDemog #Q+Demog
LGBTQ+ adults are less likely to be married & more likely to cohabit, have non-coresidential partners, or be single. They’re also more likely to live alone or w/ roommates & less likely to live w/ children, often in smaller households that may increase isolation risk. #SOGIData #LGBTDemog #Q+Demog
Here we compare relationship status and living arrangements among LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ U.S. adults—examining marriage, cohabitation, non-coresidential partners, singlehood, and household composition (living alone, with children/family, or roommates). #SOGIData #LGBTDemog #Q+Demog
Most national surveys exclude sexual and gender identity (SOGI) measures or do not link them with household rosters and non-coresidential partnership questions, limiting demographic estimates of LGBTQ+ family life. #SOGIData #LGBTDemog #Q+Demog
Excited to share this new one w/ @chrisajulian.bsky.social @gaylekaufman.bsky.social @demresjournal.bsky.social. Its wild how much we dont know about living arrangements of American families! Here we compare rels status & living arrangements among het & noncishet adults. #SOGIData #LGBTQDemog
It is so hard to get at relationships where folks do not live together with US national data! Thankfully, our American Marriage Survey allows to pick up this up, along with sexual orientation, gender, nonmonogamy and other types of relationships beyond marital! #SOGIData #LATs #CNM

#MorningReads Study finds two themes shaping how SGM participants respond to SOGI qs: (1) needing to understand why info is being collected (2) relying on environmental cues that signal safety, acceptance, freedom from discrimination. Relevance & supportive contexts improve data quality. #SOGIData

We need a body of knowledge about SOGI measurement and questions--how they can work and not any single study needs to be conclusive. We need to learn and will likely always be learning and adapting for context and population changes. #SOGIData Thank you for coming to my call for reviewers.
Researchers don't usually design the questions. But that doesn't mean we cant contextualize who is captured and measured in the instrument. #SOGIData
Here's a great example of how to:
Surveyors and demographers recognize it is a snapshot in time and they should write up findings and discussion with that sense.
#SOGIData
3. Responses can vary & people can be more than one category. Full stop. Also, responses can vary due to context. Context can include what other questions are on the survey.
Ex. I don't know my sex ort, until I see other questions-especially gender and its options.
#SOGIData #icanbequeerandstr8
2. From my experience, open text is actually fairly easy to recode and most folks easily code into 5-7 categories, tho you may have to deal with some hostile answers.
I can make arguments for both open text, and not. Research question driven & context of survey affect decision.

Three #SOGIData notes that I think folks who critique surveys likely know but seem to forget
1. Questions & optimal measures may change dependent on audience. If it is national or includes mostly cis het pop of all ages, that is very different than community specific!
#MorningReads Proposes PRICSSA, a new reporting checklist for studies using complex survey data, to improve transparency, reduce analytic errors, and promote rigor and reproducibility through standardized methods and open code. #SOGIData #DataThoughts
Weighted vs. unweighted analyses matter: ignoring survey design leads to biased estimates of health disparities among SMY. Inconsistent methods and software also weaken comparability. Follow weighting guidelines to ensure valid, reliable results. #SOGIData
Using national Japan survey data (2022), gay & bisexual men reported higher depression, hypertension, and diabetes—especially under age 50—though gaps narrowed after adjustment, underscoring the role of social context and substance use in GBM health disparities. #SOGIData #LGBTQHealth

Adult two-factor Transgender Congruence Scale doesn’t fit youth well. A three-factor model—appearance congruence, body congruence, and identity acceptance—shows stronger validity. #LGBTHealth #SOGIData
#MorningReads Using CA administrative data, ACS, and national survey data, results show marriage’s regulative, normative, & cultural advantages persist—evidence that marriage remains a distinct and strong institution in the US.

Structural stigma at the county and state level increases minority stress and mental health symptoms among sexual minority adolescents. Supportive local policies can reduce stress and protect mental health, even in unsupportive states.
