If Piastri wasn't going to 1-stop, why'd they keep him out longer on his first stint, namely. There was no point. He lost time to the entire rest of the field the last 10 laps of that stint, which is time he had to serve his penalty back into.

They originally cut down practice time in 2020 to reduce all track activity and to make travel work during covid and then just didn't restore it. Instead they were like "yeah that RNG made it awesome!"

Free practice is kinda boring, but it has a purpose! Until semi-recently we had 4 hours of practice per weekend, and the lack of it contributed toward teams not understanding the ground effect cars. It means once you're behind (ie Mercedes) there's no way to make it up.

One reason I dislike the sprint system. It adds chaos and unpredictability for just the sake of it and for no actual purpose. It adds a bunch of RNG which can result in stupid shit like the best driver on the grid getting dumped in Q1 simply because they don't know how the car works.
