“Have you seen my sweater-- ah. You’re wearing it.” Despite how Akutagawa had worded everything in the most neutral tone there was, Atsushi somehow managed to turn around to face him like a kid who had just been caught with his head inside the cookie jar. “I’m sorry, I got cold and all of mine are in the wash.” He started explaining, a tad faster than it was necessary. “But you can have it back...” “No, it’s fine.” Akutagawa quickly replied, shrugging. “Besides, it suits you.” Despite having been dating for quite a while then, and having borrowed nothing else than the other’s characteristic coat in battle even before that, Atsushi hadn’t been able to resist the nervousness upon being discovered… the same way he also couldn’t help but blush upon getting the reassurance he had just been given. In fact, it was when he glanced down right after finding himself too flustered to keep maintaining eye contact for longer when the tiger finally noticed what his boyfriend was carrying in his hands.
A cup of steaming coffee, already having been given its generous dose of sugar, because neither liked it much without; thus both were more than familiar with each other’s preference. ‘And here I thought you’d be the kinda guy to order black coffee with anything else at all.’ Atsushi had said once, only half-joking. ‘I can be full of surprises.’ Akutagawa had replied. “Oh, you made me a coffee?” Phrasing it like a question was funny, when said drink was inside Atsushi’s favorite mug too. “No, jinko, I brought it to taunt you with it.” Akutagawa deadpanned, and Atsushi might have believed him if he weren’t already handing the coffee to him. “I heard you coming home late last night, and so I figured you would need it.” “... And you were right. Thanks.” Atsushi nodded, taking the mug and relishing in its warmth. After all, and opposite to Akutagawa and his mafia-related schedules, he was more used to getting home sooner. Sure, the Agency operated in the twilight metaphorically always and literally not a small number of times, but not being done with a case before sunrise had been a first to him. But, to be fair, things had gotten complicated due to his own mistake, so… “No need.” Was the next reply he got. Still, need or not, no one could ever stop Atsushi from expressing his thanks further by pressing a kiss to Akutagawa’s lips.

“We should get married.” Upon hearing those words, Atsushi immediately started blinking in surprise and staring at Akutagawa like the rest of the world didn’t exist… at least, until the sound of Chûya facepalming broke his trance. “That better not have been your proposal, I swear--” The tiger didn’t get to hear what was coming next, because Chûya’s speech started to become gibberish (it was surprising enough the rest had been delivered properly after quite too many glasses of wine, actually) and because Akutagawa grabbed his hand and started moving with a set course: towards an empty balcony that promised proper privacy. “I should have waited until we were completely alone, but this will have to do.” He also explained, closing the door for extra measure. At no moment did he let go of Atsushi’s hand, and neither did he. “It’s fine.” Atsushi assured, chuckling.
“I suppose this kind of an interruption is better than the seasonal disaster falling over Yokohama once again, at least.” There was a smidge of amusement in Akutagawa’s demeanor as he said so, that disappeared rather quickly to make way for focus. “I would have never imagined we would be like this when we first met, and I would have never imagined I would be like this either. But that is precisely the point, isn’t it?” While he was speaking, a Rashômon tendril reached into one of his pockets, producing a small black box which could only contain the most obvious thing. “Since then, we have become irrevocably entwined, changed and evolved together. So we might as well seal the deal.” “Yeah.” Exited Atsushi’s lips during the small pause his boyfriend (now financé) took in order to open the box with his only free hand, making it so the most immediate thing he got in response was a very characteristic scoff. “Let me finish, jinko, will you?” Akutagawa said, tilting his head to point at the ring he had just extracted from said box.
Alright, sorry.” Who could blame him, though? He was ecstatic. “So, will you marry me?” As some sort of retaliation, and because the answer was out already, Akutagawa didn’t wait a single second before proceeding to put the aforementioned ring on Atsushi’s finger, even timing the motion perfectly to have it in place exactly as he repeated: “Yeah, I will.” With now both their hands locked into the other’s, what came next was a long string of celebratory kisses.
