We're sharing our #SafePlaceSelfie and letting the community know that our office is a safe place to go in the event of extreme heat. Do you know where to go if extreme weather hits? Share your selfie and be sure to follow Nevada Office of Emergency Management / Homeland Security for tips/updates.
Three individuals head across a gravel beach moving to high ground. They carry backpacks. High ground is important for tsunamis.
For #SafePlaceSelfie Day, we also want to remind you of what to do during a tsunami! If you hear a tsunami siren on the coast, head to high ground.
If the earth shakes -- drop, cover & hold on and THEN head to high ground. A siren may not sound right away. The shaking is your warning.

Let's see your "Safe Place Selfie" photo showing where you go to take cover during severe weather. Simply put, you should get as far in and as far down as you can get in your building. This photo shows Derek, Jay & Dan in the 13abc basement, where we take cover.

Kidding of course- but living on the top floor of an apartment complex in North Texas, my safe options are limited off campus! I improvise by going to the furthest back corner of the first floor parking garage and behind a cinder block wall for cover. And I bring my weather radio! #SafePlaceSelfie
We also recommend you get to know the hazards around you. For instance, what if you're near an unreinforced masonry building when an earthquake strikes? We cover that scenario here: youtube.com/watch?v=hihQ...

But, an earthquakes hits, and what if you're driving? What if you're in a grocery store? What if you're in bed? We cover those scenarios and more in this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHm6...

For #SafePlaceSelfie Day, we remind you that the best action you can take during an earthquake is to drop, cover and hold on. This action helps prevent debris from falling on your head, or glass hitting you and ensures you don't fall down during the ground shaking.

#SafePlaceSelfie time! @nws.noaa.gov is encouraging folks to share their safe spots during severe weather... ours is in the @13abc.com station basement, i.e. the lowest, centermost area away from windows/outside-facing walls. What's yours? 🏠🌪️
In the meantime, today is #SafePlaceSelfie day across the NWS. Feel free to share your safe place for where you shelter when a warning is issued. #wiwx
In the event of a tsunami evacuate the blue areas and head inland to higher ground in the red areas
DROP, COVER, & HOLD ON Drop down onto your hands and knees, get under a strong table or desk if possible, and cover your head and neck with your arms. If you are not near a table, drop against an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms.
During a severe storm, avoid unnecessary travel, avoid flood prone areas, and check in on your neighbors. During an air quality emergency, stay indoors as much as possible with windows and doors closed. Check on older adults and those with disabilities or medical conditions. During cold weather, stay indoors if possible. Keep windows and doors closed and use blankets or drapes to insulate windows. Use heating sources safely. During extreme heat, stay cool, stay hydrated and find a cool place. Keep blinds or curtains closed during the day and open windows at night if it’s cooler.
Turn around, don’t drown! Avoid walking, swimming or driving through floodwaters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Avoid water that is in contact with downed power lines.

Living in SLC, there's not really a major tornado threat, but I do still have natural disasters like earthquakes & wildfires to stay aware of. Even doing a normal fire drill gives me an opportunity to practice how quickly I can get from my 4th floor apartment to the nearest exit. #SafePlaceSelfie
Taking a selfie in an interior closet, which is my safe place from tornadoes and strong winds. Also featured is my weather radio and headlamp.
🤳 Today is #SafePlaceSelfie Day!
I'm usually at the office during hazardous weather. But if I happen to be off work, my safe place is an interior closet with no windows on the bottom floor with my NOAA Weather Radio, headlamp, helmet, and...shoes. 👠
