Here’s another example of a resin sealant: the buds of Populus balsamifera (epithet = “fragrant resin-bearer”). Buds are protected by resin (see the gloss?), which is probably also a feeding deterrent for some critters. This is another photo from Matt Lavin CCBYSA2 #Salicaceae #resin #Botany

Unlike the temperate members of the family, many tropical species have showy flowers. Casearia dodecandra is a tropical Salicaceae from the Antilles. It’s in subfamily Samydoideae and lacks salicoid teeth. #Salicaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Phyllobotryon spathulatum has epiphyllous inflorescences, i.e. the flowers appear to be borne on the upper surface of the leaf blade, as shown in this photo by Bernard DUPONT (CCBYSA2). What are the ants up to? Probably stealing nectar. #Salicaceae #botany 🌾🧪

The leaf margins of most #Salicaceae have salicoid teeth: Each tooth is vascularized & has a dark, spherical, non-deciduous callous at its tip. The exception is the early-diverging subfamily Samydoideae. They have the theoid tooth (an opaque, deciduous seta). 📷: Salix sp. #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Weeping willow is almost a waterside cliché, but its taxonomic identity is not always obvious. Some may be Salix babylonica (from e. Asia, nowhere near Babylon!); others may be a complex hybrid known as Salix × pendulina f. tristis. I don’t know how to tell them apart. #Salicaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱

This week’s topic: Salicaceae. The boundaries of #Salicaceae have changed in recent decades. It is now recognized as a cosmopolitan family of woody, mostly dioecious plants. Salix arctica is a rhizomatous groundcover & one of the most northerly vascular plants. 📷 David Stanley CCBY2 #botany 🌾🧪🌱

#Salicaceae are a mixed family: some members have flowers with showy petals, but others, like this Azara serrata of Chile, are stamen flowers. #stamenflowers #stamen #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪🌱
