"I could be referring to our friend Futaki here, with his endless, depressing talk of flaking plaster, stripped roofs, crumbling walls and corroded bricks, the sour taste of defeat haunting everything he says.... Why not talk, instead, of the failure of imagination..."
Irimiás: "The problem is money, ladies and gentleman, money, because without a penny, of course there is nothing to be done..." p 176 1/2 #Satantangotogether
Narration reverts to 3d pov: "an uncertain, wary, yet unstoppable wave of relief washed over their faces,...a brief almost impersonal sigh escaped from them...like fierce sunlight curing a cold." Then the villagers "disappointed looks now...steely." Despair falls prey. 2/2 p 172 #Satantangotogether
Irimiás's first person pov is a long and moralistic, talky monologue: "Now let's not waste any more time...we understand that Esti's death was a punishment and warning to us, and that her sacrifice serves, ladies and gentlemen, as a pointer to a better, fairer future." p 172 1/2 #Satantangotogether
„Denken Sie daran, dass Ihr schwerverdientes Geld womöglich flötengeht, und dann können Sie von vorn anfangen.... Ich und ein... Erlöser! Bringen Sie mich nicht in Verlegenheit! Nun, das schon eher... Gönner, ja, das ist richtiger, ohne Zweifel.“

since who can we trust but ourselves — no one else can lay bare the story of this momentous night and morning . . ."
Irimiás: "how many wonderful ideas were ready, just waiting to be put into action, and how excited you were about them. Now I find you all still here, in precisely the same condition as before, in fact more ragged and...duller than before! So what happened? p169 #Satantangotogether 🖤
The details we are aware of, the various confessions we have heard, are so contradictory that it would take a genius, a man with sprouts for brains, as your put it round here, to see through the rather convenient fog... All we know is that the child is dead." 2/2 More suspense! #Satantangotogether
„Schwer und düster wie das unablässige Geläut von Sturmglocken, aus dem man nichts über die eigentliche Gefahr erfährt und vorerst nur Entsetzliches heraushört, dröhnten Irimiás' Worte durch den Kneipenraum.“

...it felt good to see old familiar faces, but...I was at the same time concerned to see that you, my friends, were still stuck here--do protest if you find 'stuck' too strong a word--stuck here, at the back of beyond, years after having often enough decided to move on, (1/2)

love that play. saw it at the gate theatre in dublin a few summers ago.
they depicted two separate time periods on stage at the same time, if I recall correctly.

"There was no reason to stop playing it and when he got to the end he started it again, without a break, like a child among the sleeping adults..." 2/2 Echo of Esti appears in a lyric Joycean ending to this chapter, honoring the dead... p158 #Esti #Satantangotogether
Kerekes picked up the accordion...swayed his enormous body back and forth in time to the gentle lilting of the music and when he got to the middle of it a tear appeared in the corner of his numb eyelid... 1/2 #Satantangotogether

Back on-terms!
After Sunday’s utterly shambolic & pants showing by Arse F.C. in last Sunday’s league cup final, I was sorely needing cheering-up — and it was this delightful, uplifting and lighthearted novel to the rescue!
Plus Futaki, Schmidt & co had more agency than Arsenal
Mrs. Halics..."firm in her faith, only wondering why judgment was so slow in coming... She could not help but see that the devil had gained a complete, if momentary victory--that being the devil's aim --over those gathered in the bar... 4/4 p 155 #Satantangotogether 💙
"...hands on her hips, upbraided the laughing menfolk. 'Coward! Worms! Don't any of you have the guts to take a turn with me?!' Halics was not going to be called a coward by anyone... He bounded up to Mrs. Kraner. "Time for a tango!" he cried... 3/4 p 153 #Satantangotogether
So far behind... I just finished the doctor's chapter. I gotta say he's the most interesting character so far. I wonder if it is because of the PofV--so close in his head. The opening chapter is in Futaki's head, but it's somehow less stream of consciousness and more reportage. #satantangotogether
Like the others, he no longer believed that anything could change. He had resigned himself to staying here for the rest of his life because there was nothing he could do about it. Could an old head like his set itself to anything new? That was how he had thought but (1/2)

Sein riesenhafter Schatten folgte ihm wie ein Gespenst an den Wänden entlang, kroch hin und wieder an die Decke hinauf und sank, als sein Herr sich wieder setzte, in die Ecke zurück.“

Again, Irish drama occurs to me, this time Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa, in which the sisters dance just before the act break. Similar abandon (and joy), though in Satantango, it verges on maniacal. (And then everyone lapses into "peaceful snoring" and spiders take over.) #satantangotogether
They dance the Satantango at the end of Part I! Halics, that flat tire of a man, cuts quite a figure "in his unique moment of glory with his demonic caperings around the puffing and whooping figure of Mrs. Kráner." What an image. Good for him.
