A distant shot of a Satin Bower Bird undertaking some maintenance of his bower. Pavers are in the foreground with some blue plastic things scattered in front of the bower.

I saw (admittedly from a distance) the garden’s Satin Bower Bird today - he seemed to be doing some maintenance on the bower and has brought along even more blue plastic things.

Satin Bowerbirds (a medium sized Australian bird from eastern Australia) are renowned for decorating their bowers with all manner of blue objects to attract a mate. These range from parrot feathers to flowers, seed pods and fruits, butterfly wings and artificial items such as ball-point pens, matchboxes, string, marbles and pieces of glass.

The adult male has striking glossy blue-black plumage, a pale bluish-white bill and a violet-blue iris. Bowerbird calls include an amazing variety of sounds, including whistles, buzzing and hissing, as well as mimicry. The male also gives a loud “weeoo”.

Satin bowerbird is building masterpiece for his female bird. At first you may think that blue things are sapphires, but it's just trash (straws from drinks and etc.) This bird has ability to turn trash into treasures and create art.

State distribution:

The photo shows a glossy black bird with plumage that shimmers with an almost metallic blue sheen. This iridescent effect is caused by the light diffracting off the surface texture of his feathers. It has a pale bluish-white bill and piercing violet-blue eyes.
