These birds are stocky with short tails, pointed wings, and long, pointed bills. Their plumage appears black and speckled in the image, characteristic of their winter appearance. In summer, they become dark and glossy with a metallic sheen. Manoeuvre: The standard Canadian spelling, also used in British English. The "-oe-" diphthong is the key feature.
