To support jobs & to protect our environment from imported pests and diseases, we should only be planting trees that are UK & Ireland Sourced and Grown (#UKISG standard). Our priorities for the next Scottish Government ➡️ buff.ly/e2KzGBr

Scotland's deer population is too high for nature recovery. This makes tree planting expensive because of the need for fencing & tubes. Our asks of the next Scottish Government ➡️ buff.ly/e2KzGBr #MairTreesPlease #ManifestoAsk #ScotParlElection26

Currently it's much easier for landowners to benefit from lucrative carbon schemes (such as the Woodland & Peatland Carbon Codes) than it is for tenant #Crofters. The next Scot Gov should change this so that tenant crofters can benefit when they improve their land for nature. #ScotParlElection26

Current funding mechanisms aren't working well. The next Scottish Government should help farmers and crofters to integrate more native trees and hedges into their land. 2/2

It's clear our native and ancient trees need more protection. It's still too easy to chop them down or damage them - there are gaps in existing protections.

New legislation could close these gaps and protect Scotland's native trees for the future.

Blue graphic with leaves and a WTS logo. Reads, 'The next Scottish Government must deliver the long-awaited National register of Ancient Woodland.'

The Scottish Government pledged to deliver a comprehensive National Register of Ancient Woodland in 2021. This commitment remains undelivered.

A Register remains vital for clarity on where our ancient woodland is, so we can protect it.

Too often, nature budgets take the first hit when the Scottish Government is looking for cash. That needs to stop. If we're serious, nature budgets must be increased to make nature restoration targets (including woodland creation) possible.

Graphic with blue background, grey leaves and a WTS logo that reads, 'The next Scottish Government should create new Forestry Grant Scheme options for riparian, montane and urban woodlands.'

The Forestry Grant Scheme (FGS) is the most important fund for woodland creation in Scotland. It should be improved to include new standalone options for priority areas where it is currently inadequate - including for riparian, montane and urban settings.

Binding targets are important, and so is action to deliver them. The next Scottish Government should create a minimum of 18,000 hectares of new woodland every year, and at least half of that (minimum 9,000 hectares) should be native woodland.
