Alert 3/30-31: Elliott Bay Trail will be fully closed overnight in Myrtle Edwards Park All overnight trail access will be closed through Myrtle Edwards and Centennial Parks March 30 and 31, according to a notice from the Elliott Bay Connections team that SDOT posted to Bluesky. Both the walking and biking paths will be closed from the Olympic Sculpture Park to the Expedia campus starting each evening at 8 p.m. and reopening each morning at 5 a.m.

Wire thieves keep causing bike path blackouts Photo from WSDOT. Just as an organized group of neighbors finally convinced SDOT, Seattle Parks, Seattle City Light and WSDOT to figure out how to get the lights working after two years of darkness along the I-90 Trail in Sam Smith Park, another biking and walking path goes dark. WSDOT sent out an alert that wire thieves have struck the Montlake area, and lights for the biking and walking path were among those that lost their power connections.

2026 legislature recap: E-moto law passed and safety funding preserved, complete streets and presumed liability failed Good news for biking families like mine: The legislature protected the legal status of this class 1 e-bike. Bike advocates in Washington State won a bit this legislative session while also avoiding funding cuts and the kinds of anti-bicycle laws under consideration this year in other states. Preserving funding for safe streets programs is always an important goal, especially as budgets face crunches, and Washington Bikes celebrated that the state remains on track to invest $150 million into safe streets and and walk/bike access programs this year.

Friday: MOHAI is screening the excellent From Rails to Trails documentary Tonight (March 13), MOHAI is hosting a screening of the Edward Norton-narrated PBS documentary From Rails to Trails at their South Lake Union museum. From 6–7 you can check out their Seattle cycling history exhibit. The film screening starts at 7. It's a great film! I've had a partial draft of a review of it written since it first came out, but somehow I never finished writing it.

SDOT is shrinking Airport Way bike lane by one foot From Adam Bartz via Bluesky. People biking between Georgetown and downtown were surprised yesterday to find construction crews tearing up the concrete barrier protected the bike lane on Airport Way S between S Alaska Street and the bridge. There was little to no notice about the work, though at least there is a sidewalk to help folks get around the closure.

Bellevue plans speed limit reductions on most city streets + Take their survey From the Safe Speeds Bellevue project webpage. The City of Bellevue has released a plan to reduce the speed limits on nearly every city street where limits are currently higher than 25. Most streets would see their limits dropped by 5 mph though a couple, including NE Bellevue-Redmond Road and NE 20th Street, would drop 10 mph from 35 to 25 while 148th Ave NE would drop from 40 to 30.

WA House Transpo Committee passes e-moto bill that stops short of classifying them as motorcycles for now The WA House Transportation Committee passed SB 6110 with a striking amendment (PDF). The Washington State House Transportation Committee unanimously approved an amended version of Senate Bill 6110 - 2025-26 that does not include a legal definition for "electric motorcycles" nor does it add them to the existing section of laws regulating "motorcycles." Instead, legislators are putting these questions to a new workgroup so they can hopefully create a more nuanced and complete set of regulation and code changes around e-motos.

Work underway to build missing Yesler Way bike lane Map from SDOT. Crews are already working on some underground utilities needed to build two key blocks of missing bike lane on Yesler Way between the Waterfront bikeway and the rest of the downtown bike network, including Occidental, 2nd and 4th Avenues. It was frustrating when the waterfront bikeway opened with such a small-but-crucial gap. People are constantly confused about where to go after crossing Alaskan Way because the existing two-way bike lane simply ends, stranding people on the wrong side of the road with no clear indication about how they are supposed to reach the rest of the bike network.
