My story of recovery from self-harming  I thought this would be an easy story to tell. I don't know why I thought that because telling this story is the very definition of vulnerability.

Self-injury Awareness Day (March 1) was created to spread awareness of #SelfInjury, often misunderstood. Those who self-harm can feel alone + afraid to reach for help b/c of stigma. Understanding can #EndStigma. Laura's story: https://ow.ly/4SEQ50Yn4tM #SelfInjuryAwarenessDay #MentalHealth

Self-Injury Awareness Day (SIAD) (also known as Self-Harm Awareness Day) is an annual global awareness event/campaign on March 1st where on this day, and the following weeks, some people choose to be more open about their own self-harm to raise awareness.

Its important to note that some people don't even know why they are self-harming. Self-harm is a symptom of underlying mental problems. Things like alcohol/drug addiction, eating disorders, etc. are mental illnesses in itself and should be treated as such.

‼️TW: Cutting // ED Behaviour
Ive started self-harming about ten years ago. At first I manipulated myself into unhealthy eating habits, including bulimic behaviour, because I felt like Im loosing control over my life. But it didnt take long for me to develop a cutting addiction. Cutting gave me an instant relief. I did it to feel anything, when there was nothing but emptiness, but also to regulate myself during overloads or mental breakdowns. It was also a way to punish myself for things other people probably wouldn't even think about for long: A bad grade in school, usage of wrong wording or misunderstandings during conversations (which is pretty common for me), having to say 'no' to someone asking a favor, making mistakes that involve others, the list goes on. I felt like a failure, still do in a way. I remember a lot of nights crying silently, because I was too ashamed to tell someone I'm struggling.
There were a lot of attempts to stop it. I went to therapy, had relapses. But I managed to stay clean for a little over a year now.

Wounds will heal but the scars remain for the rest of my life. Ive had moments were I didnt give a fluff about someone seeing them, but for some reason I cant anymore. I dont know if my self esteem just dropped that much, or if people actually react differently to them. Anxiety does fog up my thoughts. I figured the only way to make peace with it myself, is by talking about it.

SELF-HARM IS NOT ATTENTION-SEEKING
People who self-harm may attempt to:

- deal with severe anxiety or distress

- feel in control of their body, especially when dissociating (feel detached from
themselves and their environment)

- punish themsehves

- manage or reduce intense feelings,
such as panic , anger, guilt or hopelessness

- express internal feelings in an external way

- feel literally anything, while feeling numb or empty

- provide distraction or relief from painful
emotions through physical pain

You are not alone. Your pain is real. Your voice matters.

Today, on Self-Injury Awareness Day, we acknowledge the silent struggles that so many face. Self-injury is often misunderstood, but at its core, it is not attention-seeking—it is a coping mechanism for deep emotional pain.

It is well known that people who experience discrimination, unfairness and isolation are more likely to self harm because there self worth is eroded. It is important to talk to a trusted adult about this to reduce this risk. At the same time, it is the responsibility of the adults, at home, in the community and leaders, to create safe environments of acceptance and zero discrimination.

Too many young people, especially neurodivergent learners, are left feeling unheard, unsupported, and overwhelmed by an education system that doesn’t accommodate their needs. No student should have to suffer in silence.

At Limitless Learners, we believe in creating safe, understanding spaces where learners are met with compassion, not judgment. Education isn’t just about grades—it’s about empowerment, self-worth, and knowing that you matter.

💛 If you're struggling, please know that help is available, and you are never alone.

💛 If you're an educator, be the support system that students need.

📢 Tutors, join our mission. With exam season approaching, we’re offering 30% off for neurodivergent tutors and for the month of March, we are offering 20% off for all tutors.
