1. Syracuse and the surrounding upstate NY are known to not be very prone to seeing tornados touch down. But times are changing. There are numerous studies pointing out that Tornado Alley is moving eastward encompassing new areas that were previously not seeing many tornados a year. Please take all Tornado warnings seriously, no matter how rare you may think they are in NY, they're much more unpredictable nowadays and are acting quite differently than we are used to.

2.Tornado warning doesn't mean a Tornado has touched down or necessarily been spotted. It is required to send out a warning if rotation is seen within the dopple radar/velocity radar and/OR a Tornado has been spotted. So don't panic, but take it seriously. The amount of customers I saw running out of wegmans at the worst of the storm, with my managers calling for shelter in place over the intercom was disturbing. We all think we're invincible here as we have been so lucky to have fairly few natural disasters here, but this is what can make it even more dangerous.

3. The executice orders that called for cuts to NOAA/NWS and mass firings are not just disturbing but are deadly. After a mass Tornado outbreak last year in NY, we are expecting even worse this year. And thats just in NYS. Across the country it will be even worse. Meteorology is something that is more accurate and efficient with more people, you cannot afford to lose anyone in these departments. Firing these scientists is guaranteeing that our response times will be slower and there will he more forecasting fatigue from trying to make up for the lost coworkers which can lead to poor decision making on our part if we are working to cover multiple peoples jobs. Please stand with meteorologist, and hell all scientists. At the very least if you hear people making the same tired jokes of "they get paid to be wrong" call them out. Meteorology is still progressing and improving and its not easy due to how much we still need to learn about our atmosphere.

However, the world would be TREMENDOUSLY worse off without us. But some will choose not to believe it until it's too late.

As I an earning my bachelor's in meteorology and look to focus on severe weather for my graduate studies, I can't help being excited by severe weather. That does not mean I do not take it seriously, as should you.
