Fantasiaklassikko. Susan Cooperin "Pimeä nousee" -sarjan (1965-77) päätösosa. Suomennos (erinomaisia) vasta 1979-81. Kaksi ensimmäistä osaa loistavia ("Yllä meren, alla kiven" ja "Pimeä nousee"). Vain tämä päätösosa on jäänyt kirjahyllyyn. #SusanCooper #TheDarkisRising #SilverontheTree
Doing a lot of comfort reading lately. Struck yesterday by this passage from #SilverOnTheTree, part of #TheDarkIsRising sequence by #SusanCooper. Sorry for the lack of photo quality 😆
The wikipedia photo of a Mari Lwyd, found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mari_Lwyd#/media/File:Chepstow-mari-lwyd.jpg It shows a horse skull with a wacky glass eye, some flowers and ribbons, and a sheet over it with a person underneath. Someone is holding its multicoloured red/green/white reins.
Mari Lwyd attack! Though I always find those funny so it was hard to find it as scary as the characters. I mean look at it! Adorable! #SilverOnTheTree
The Lady's a bee now? "I am the queen of every hive " #SilverOnTheTree
"Despair, the most terrible creation of them all" #SilverOnTheTree
The way the Dark messes with the sword maker's head is a very accurate depicition of creative fears. #SilverOnTheTree
"Was it real? There's a silly question now." Bran summing it all up well. #SilverOnTheTree
Shattering glass? Jareth is definitely behind this like he's Tonty Blair. #SilverOnTheTree
"There must be something we ought to be remembering" says Will, summing uo my entire conscious life. #SilverOnTheTree
I'm with Bran. The mirror maze is nasty. The goblin king must be around here somewhere. #SilverOnTheTree
This hidden city/Atlantis place is reminding me of Piranesi. I wonder if Clarke had it in mind at all? #SilverOnTheTree
Bran is now having an attack of the "things I didn't know I knew", tapping into whatever part of himself is mythic. Also, Will realises that there's a literal fourth wall in this land, and all the world's a stage. #SilverOnTheTree
"This place doesn't mean ANYTHING" - something I feel a lot in the process of writing. I don't think this is supposed to be explicitly about writing, but it has that resonance for me. How you have to discover what things mean as you go along, both as a reader and a writer. #SilverOnTheTree
I loved the timeslip back to when it was a busy port - it seemed that the slip was conjured entirely via nostalgia, by the narration of what it was like there in the past. Made me think how real life stories are mythic too - the past before living memory. #SilverOnTheTree
Disappearing Polecats! #SilverOnTheTree
Welsh Atlantis time! #SilverOnTheTree
I like the comparison of will sensing the Dark like an animal smelling Man. Never forget we are a predator. #SilverOnTheTree
"He is the Pendragon" - big "strange women lying in ponds" energy whenever i am expected to take kings and their heirs seriously. #SilverOnTheTree
"It was wrong, this thing from the lake". Wait it's talking now?? #SilverOnTheTree
The private message meme showing a man with long hair and dark glasses sharing three messages in a row against a black background: i aint reading all that i'm happy for u tho or sorry that happened
Yet again I am reminded I am NOT suited to mystical heroism. So. Much. To. Remember. Crystal sword, gotcha, lost land, gotcha...the rest? All a vague mist to me. Is Jane going to remember all that without being an Old One? #SilverOnTheTree
Jane's encounter with The Lady is curious: they are "like and like". What connects them? And why does the Lady call her Juno and Iana? Is this an "I'm every woman it's all in me" deal? Are they linked by afflictions (black dog/old age)? #SilverOnTheTree
"You can't convince them and you cant kill 'em" - mr stanton giving a nifty summary #SilverOnTheTree
"You can't always believe these people," says racist dad. Saying the quiet parts out loud.
#SilverOnTheTree
The random homesick roman is quite touching #SilverOnTheTree
Will earwigging in on...I assume it's Arthur and Merlin...talking about bloody battles and the rising dark. And it's time for some wibbly wobbly timey wimey discussions with Will. #SilverOnTheTree
I don't care if it's a chicken-eating creature of the dark, leave the mink alone. #SilverOnTheTree
The racist bullying scene is brutal. Stephen takes a get in the sea* approach. James being a bit all lives matter about it but Stephen isn't convinced. #SilverOnTheTree
*scummy, stagnant stream
Hope the mink is ok! And...wait, Stephen's mind has been wiped of the conversation about the Old One? There's a lot of mortals getting their minds wiped in this series. Can't be good for the braincells. #SilverOnTheTree
While Will is explaining the Dark and the Light and the various types of magic to Stephen, something struck me: the job of the Dark is to take over the world`but the job of the Light isn't positively defined: it's to stop the Dark. The Light's power is the power of NO and STOP. #SilverOnTheTree
Ooh we're going back to the carnival head. Enjoying that stephen can hear the capital letters in Old Ones like he's in a Pratchett novel. I hope we get to meet the Old One who gave it to Stephen. #SilverOnTheTree
