The painting is today a central work in Brøndum's dining room and is considered one of Krøyer's main works. The picture shows some of the Norwegian and Swedish artists who were part of the colony in 1883, while Michael Ancher stands in the background, and hotel owner Degn Brøndum sits at the table. Krøyer himself is not in the picture. The artists are depicted in one of the situations they themselves have described in their anecdotes: The conversation around the table. There were no official rules for the members of the artist colony, and the artists were not together as an artist association or artist group, but because they chose to be part of an informal community. The picture was probably painted in the room that was covered with brown-stained wooden panels in 1884 and later became known as Brøndum's dining room.

When Krøyer first came to Skagen, he was already a famous artist, and his presence created attention for the artist colony on Skagen. In the summer, many artists gathered to work and party. The latter was often at Krøyer's initiative - he loved sociability and festivity.
It is the pictures from Skagen that Krøyer is particularly known and loved for. Here he depicts the artists' carefree lives, their festive meals, walks on the beach and atmospheric evenings in the moonlight.
