In a study led by my colleague Hugo Ulloa, we reveal a surprising new mechanism for erosion by raindrops. Sandballs form when rolling drops mop up sand, even reaching a jammed state! #SoftEarthGeophysics

Just dropped: "Lecture 2: The world is a sandpile. Why everything is threshold, and threshold is everything" in the Soft Earth Chalk Talk series youtube.com/@pennsed?si=...

Mountains, faults, rivers & sand dunes are perched on the threshold of failure.
🧪Today we begin releasing the #SoftEarthGeophysics Chalk Talks, INFORMAL lectures laying out how to think of Earth's surface as a soft matter landscape.
This labor of love started w/ a @kitp-ucsb.bsky.social blackboard talk, and grew with support across @sas.upenn.edu @pennengineering.bsky.social
I am beyond honored to be recognized by @apsphysics.bsky.social !
Being an "adult learner" in physics is hard, but the community has been so supportive!
More important, to me, is the recognition of #SoftEarthGeophysics and its home in APS.
On the "seminar circuit" I keep finding people who didn't know about our #SoftEarthGeophysics conference at @kitp-ucsb.bsky.social and that want to come. Please share with your colleagues and research groups. Details below.
Check me out on @cbsnews.com talking about Mars rocks and using landscape patterns to search for life on other planets. #SoftEarthGeophysics

There will be lively, long and luxurious poster sessions -- with great interactions and snacks.
There will be surf lessons!
We will be building the community of #SoftEarthGeophysics and defining problems TOGETHER, that will feed a 3-month program to follow.

Terrifying.
#SoftEarthGeophysics friends, I keep wondering if there's some volunteer science brigade we could form, to serve the USFS, USGS and local universities that will have to do the hard work of hazard assessment. I'm here to help, with my team, as field or lab assistants in these efforts.
Applications for our (Vashan Wright, Nathalie Vriend, Sijit Datta) KITP program on #SoftEarthGeophysics close TODAY! kitp.ucsb.edu/activities/s...
Program will run 5 January - 26 March 2026! Please repost and apply TODAY (16 December 2024) if you want to be considered!
There's gonna be some great #SoftEarthGeophysics at #AGU24, including "granular and fluid physics in Earth Surface Processes (e.g., agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/me...).
Our PennSED crew has some bangers! A thread
this is us! an awesome conversation. get into this baseball mud mystery! #SoftEarthGeophysics
please add me! i'm into #SoftEarthGeophysics. here's a link to my lab's website: pennsed.seas.upenn.edu
PhD student presenting a slide with a visual abstract of her thesis research, containing infographics of lateral spreading and the tools she used
Congrats to newly-minted Dr. Nancy Ingabire Abayo who defended her PhD yesterday, merging geomorphology, geotech, granular materials, and GIS to better-predict lateral spreading due to earthquakes #SoftEarthGeophysics It was a tour de force, so glad I had the opportunity to be on her committee!
Speaker in front of a project slide
Back in the other place there was a #SoftEarthGeophysics community that was really productive. Hoping to start one here. Two #APSMarch sessions are happening now and tomorrow, gathering that community in person.

"It’s sort of like the start of a joke—a volcanologist and a coffee expert walk into a bar and then come out with a paper” -- this paper has the inspiration going the opposite direction from most #softearthgeophysics
