Detailed schematic of sampling System 1 (UA) and System 2 (ARI). Column matrix gas concentrations were controlled by mixing cylinder gas with UZA using MFCs and delivering the custom gas mixture through the columns from bottom to top (dotted orange line). Probe sampling flow rates were controlled precisely using three MFCs to ensure that flow in and out of the probe was balanced (probe flow (blue lines) + dilution flow (red lines) is equal to total flow to analyzer (black lines)). Column headspace (atmospheric pressure) and control gas bypass (positive pressure) were controlled by MFCs at two points (dilution, total flow to analyzer), forcing the probe flow as a makeup flow (probe flow is equal to total flow minus dilution flow).
