New public investment announced in the #SpendingReview2025 will help to boost UK economic growth in less prosperous areas, but the UK's net public investment as a share of GDP still lags behind other advanced economies, says @niesrorg.bsky.social's @adrianpabst.bsky.social. #productivity #investment

We are pleased to see these #SpendingReview2025 commitments to reform public services underscored by three principles - principles we’ve long been making the case for through our work on The Preventative State, Liberated Public Services and in our Citizens’ White Paper.

Amid the headline announcements on housing, defence, and energy, yesterday’s #SpendingReview2025 made quiet promises for a radical new approach to #PublicServiceReform - a long-overdue shift that Demos warmly welcomes.

Confirmed UK Government projects in Scotland – including support for regional productivity through development funding for Carbon Capture, investment in advanced manufacturing in Glasgow, and the reinstatement of support for the UK’s most powerful supercomputer in Edinburgh – highlights the government’s commitment to boosting productivity across the country. Broader questions remain however, over the coordination of such policies with the Scottish Government’s own economic development plans.

The #SpendingReview2025 signalled support for boosting productivity across Scotland, says @graemeroy.bsky.social (@uofglasgow.bsky.social / @uofgasbs.bsky.social) but how will these projects be coordinated with the Scottish Government's economic plans?

BBC headline above a picture of Rachel Reeves “Winners and losers: Who got what in the spending review?”

More austerity cuts disguised by the myth of ‘efficiencies’

More re-announcements of spending already agreed

More tinkering instead of fundamental changes

More of the same old Labour/Tory managerialism instead of political leadership

Confused about what actually happened in #SpendingReview2025? For me, this chart is the clearest way to get a handle on the magnitudes: 2028-29 vs. 2024-25 absolute (and %) changes, in real terms. [This is total, not just capital, because in reality, resource spending dominates.] #dataisbeautiful

Quote from Academy President Sir John Lazar CBE FREng, that reads: "In the face of significant headwinds, we are pleased to see recognition of the importance of engineering and technology to the UK’s prosperity and security, backed up by increased investment. We welcome the continued and longer-term support for R&D, energy and infrastructure.

Funding to realise the AI Opportunities Action Plan, the go-ahead for the new supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh, and the confirmation of continued funding for ARIA are all important commitments.

However, to ensure the nation can maximise societal value from these investments, they must be embedded in a longer-term strategy. We eagerly await the Industrial Strategy to provide clarity for business and enterprise, so they can make informed investment decisions and continue to contribute to jobs and growth.

We also welcome the uplift in investment for skills, but remain concerned about the need for holistic, strategic planning and investment in this space. The Academy’s new Skills Centre will seek to ensure that the engineering community can play its full part in delivering the skills base the country needs to thrive and prosper.

Under Labour, the NHS will get the investment it needs.

We’re boosting NHS spending by 3% every year until 2029 — to cut waiting lists and get patients the care they deserve.

Weston deserves better. Labour delivers.

The #SpendingReview2025 once again sets the stage for Labour's plan for growth—but with rising costs and squeezed margins, we urge Ministers and Mayors to act and back our sector in national policymaking and Local Growth Plans.

Spending increase of £190 billion on way too many areas to list here.

Sure though. Labour are doing nothing.

The Tories first spending review cut spending by 2.9%.
