Great Black Digger Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) perched on flower as a Small Carpenter Bee (Ceratina strenua) flies in for a landing. The Wasp is large at approximately 30mm in length. It is all black and wings appear iridescent blue based on their angles. They are solitary wasps and do not sting humans unless you aggressively go after them. I don’t blame them! They are beneficial insects for gardeners pollinating for carrot, bean, and milkweed family plants. They nest in the ground. They prey on grasshoppers and use them to feed the larvae when they hatch. The native plant featured is Mountain Mint. Don’t confuse this for the mint herb you find at big box stores because they are NOT the same. Search this plant’s scientific name, Pycnanthemum muticum, to learn more. pollinators nativeplants pollinatorgarden mountainmint invertebrates wasps beneficials greatblackwasp
