Nasria pledges N$350 000 to support Brave Warriors Erasmus Shalihaxwe The Namibia Special Risks Insurance Association (Nasria) has handed over sponsorships worth N$355 000, including N$100 000 in cash, to the Brave Warriors to support their FIFA World Cup preparations. Nasria marketing and sales executive Ndapona Schleberger said the contribution forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and represents an investment in Namibia’s human capital. “This investment fuels national pride, inspires our youth and supports our athletes as they represent Namibia on the world’s grandest sporting stage. The support we have handed over today represents far more than their monetary value. For the Brave Warriors, it is a tangible expression of national pride and belief to soar,” she said. The Brave Warriors are aiming to raise N$9.6 million to cover player bonuses and operational costs for the World Cup campaign.  Earlier this month, FNB Namibia donated N$500 000. At a fundraising gala dinner, a total of N$978 300 was raised by various institutions and members of the public. Meanwhile, the Namibia Football Association (NFA) has announced the cancellation of the fundraising game between African Stars and Eeshoke Chula Chula due to lack of sponsors.  NFA spokesperson Isack Hamata said the organising committee had expected sponsors to come on board but this did not materialise. “The committee would like to sincerely thank both teams for having agreed to participate in this game and apologise to the players and fans who looked forward to this world-class derby this coming Sunday. The committee will now turn its focus on the upcoming Brave Warriors World Cup qualifiers vs Malawi and Sao Tome on the 5 and 9 September in Francistown, Botswana respectively,” Hamata said. Hamata added that the committee remains confident that the Brave Warriors will qualify for the 2026 World Cup and urged Namibians to support the team. “The campaign’s win-a-car competition will end on 31 August 2025 and the public therefore still has a few days to SMS the word ‘Brave Warriors’ to the number 106 and stand a chance to win a brand new Toyota Xs valued at N$300,000. Each SMS is charged only N$3,” Hamata said.

Navachab boosts road running  The 2024 winners of the Navachab Gold Mine Half Marathon, Daniel Paulus and Lavinia Haitope, will take on some of Southern Africa’s top road athletes when they compete in the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon in Gqeberha on Saturday.  At a press conference in Windhoek yesterday, McLyn Kasale of Navachab Gold Mine announced a sponsorship for the two athletes, as well as for last year’s two social category winners, Lazarus Shangadi and Victoria Shinime, who will compete in the social category in Gqeberha. Kasale added that he and the organizer of the Navachab Half Marathon, Bethold Karumendu, will also accompany the athletes to learn more about staging top-class events, with the aim of raising the profile of the Navachab Half Marathon. “We are excited to be part of this journey. It has been a long one, but we want it to be much longer and we want this race to be recognized at a regional and an international level, so that’s why we are strategically building it up until we reach that stage,” he said. “Our target is to register for the bronze status on the World Athletics radar, but we realize that we won’t achieve that if we don’t get exposure to races that have gone through the same journey, and that’s why we are targeting Gqeberha because they now have silver status on the World Athletics radar. So we are going to learn a lot from them, their standards and technical exposure, and the shared values of what it is that we need to offer to Namibian athletes,” he said. “We have involved Lazarus and Victoria because they are also serving on the local organizing committee of the Navachab Half Marathon, so whatever they learn there, they will implement back home so that the Navachab Half Marathon becomes better and better each year,” he added. Kasale said they are also targeting the youth with the aim of tracking Namibia’s top young talents. “We are also targeting the youth segment of our population, the schools, because our view is that there should be tracking of athletes from a young age so that as they improve, they can participate in any marathon in the world. Not just participate, but to make us proud like netball did just a few days ago. We want to celebrate these athletes coming back with a trophy; that’s what we want, and that’s Navachab’s viewpoint, to say we will contribute this as our social corporate responsibility, and this is what we are able to bring to the table,” he said. Karumendu thanked Navachab for their support: “They have been supporting this race for more than ten years and now they have a vision for the race to become bigger and better, by sending our winners to the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon. This race has been accredited by World Athletics and they will have top athletes from countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho, as well as the local elite athletes from South Africa. Karumendu said the standard of road races in Namibia was poor and needed to be uplifted. “We want to upgrade the level of road running in Namibia and the level of our athletes in order to get to the level of the rest of Africa and the rest of the world. The standard of our road races in Namibia is very low and we need to uplift it, in terms of prize money, to be able to have quality athletes coming to compete in Namibia. “At that moment, when athletes are asking you what you are paying for first place at the Navachab Half Marathon, then I say N$20 000. Some of them, from countries like Zimbabwe and Zambia might come, but the top elite athletes will not come,” he said. “But the moment you get a better race that’s accredited by World Athletics, the athletes will come. When the athletes are coming to Namibia, we may have quality races, which can even serve as a qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” he added. Karumendu said the road to Los Angeles had already started and called on corporates to get involved in sport sponsorship. “If you don’t invest in our athletes now, you may only get one or two athletes who will qualify for the 2028 Olympics, and then if you ask why do we have so few athletes, then you will realize it’s because we did not invest in them,” he said. “We came back from the Paris Olympics last year, but is there any program to help elite athletes prepare for international games coming up over the next four years? No, there is none,” he added. The director of sport, Jo-Ann Manuel, thanked Navachab for their investment and called on other corporates to do the same. “If you look at the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, goal 17 talks about smart partnerships to reach our goals. And what are our goals? If you look at one of the goals, it says healthy living and well-being, so those goals are talking to sport and these are the partnerships that we have to create. We don’t need to stage big events, but we need to create opportunities for our athletes,” she said. “So Navachab Mine, don’t look at the monetary terms, look at the opportunities that you have created. We are grateful and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for what you have done,” she said. The post Navachab boosts road running  appeared first on The Namibian.

NFA-Debmarine marriage on the rocks Debmarine Namibia chief executive Willy Mertens slammed the Namibia Football Association (NFA) on Saturday, saying they do not feel respected or valued by its leadership. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony of the Debmarine Namibia Premiership on a cold winter’s night at Independence Stadium, Mertens said the company’s relationship with the NFA has become quite chilly. “Our wish is that the NFA leadership, although absent today, would start to value, respect and appreciate sponsors, put the development of football, the welfare of the players and the interest of the clubs above their personal objectives,” he said. “We, at Debmarine Namibia, as a sponsor certainly did not feel respected and valued by the NFA leadership – especially over the past two years. Only then will we move football forward in this country,” he said. Mertens called on the NFA to launch an independent league as part of a transformation project that was lagging behind. “It is time for the league to transcend to the next stage of becoming independent from the NFA, and we hope the NFA leadership will make their commitment a reality. We believe an independent model will be the only way to attract and retain sustainable sponsorship for the league. We had hoped the transformation project would be far advanced by now.” CALL FOR FIFA GUIDANCE When contacted for comment, NFA president Robert Shimooshili said they are working on establishing an independent league, but called for guidance from world governing body Fifa. “I am out of the country and I’m not aware of Mr Willy Mertens’ comments other than what I picked up from social media. About an independent league, that is what all top-tier football personnel would like to have realised, but the past historic abnormality emanating from the top-tier league doesn’t go well with our international mother body Fifa, which is guiding, managing and monitoring in line with their existing statutes managing all 211 members’ associations, including the NFA of Namibia. “Therefore, we would like to get their guidance, if Namibia is ready or not, but at the beginning of the season they warned NFA and other countries about third-party influence and they reminded NFA about the past situation and advised that the NFA needs to normalise its football in totality before it rushes to an independent top-tier league,” he said. “The NFA is working on it and calls upon all Namibian-related stakeholders to hold hands to ensure our top-tier league becomes an independent league very soon.” Shimooshili said the NFA respects and values Debmarine Namibia’s sponsorship of football in Namibia. “The NFA and its rank and file members, as well as all football families acknowledge, respect and appreciate Debmarine Namibia and its leadership for the commitment and investments they have contributed to the game of football over the past years. “Debmarine Namibia and the NFA are economic and social partners, and the NFA would like to see many more entities contribute to social stability and development through football and follow the good example set by Debmarine Namibia,” he said. “Some entities are still reluctant to contribute to football where our youth will be the primary beneficiaries, while it will also contribute to economic growth. We need to play football in all 14 regions and 121 constituencies of Namibia simply because football unites and brings communities together, and football contributes to economic growth and development, poverty eradication, and hunger reduction. “The NFA wants to make the job of our politicians easier by uniting the people through football. Therefore, we urge football families to set negativities and differences aside and work together towards the development of the game.” Shimooshili said football politics must be avoided at all times. “Let’s allow the NFA to fulfil its mandate as a custodian of football in the country to manage, administer, control and monitor football, as well as to develop the game,” he said. INVESTMENT In his speech, Mertens said they have invested about N$50 million in the Debmarine Namibia Premiership over the past three years, which has empowered the NFA to strengthen league operations, improve remuneration for players and technical staff, referees, medical personnel, guesthouses, and lodges at various towns, as well as transport service providers. At the same time it has extended the reach of football across Namibia, he said. “Our involvement, as mentioned earlier, commenced with the NFA Cup in 2015, and extended to support for the Brave Warriors, Brave Gladiators as well as African Stars and the Tura Magic Ladies Team when they competed in the African Club competitions. This amounted to close to N$80 million over the past 10 years,” Mertens said. “Beyond the pitch, this investment has had a profound impact on livelihoods, employing 877 individuals across various roles, including technical teams, security personnel, medical staff, stadium workers, accommodation providers, transport services, referees, and vendors. “This number mirrors the workforce of Debmarine Namibia, reinforcing our belief in the transformative potential of our contributions. Just as our natural diamonds touch hearts worldwide, our investment in football touches lives right here at home,” he said. Nedbank Desert Ice Challenge T20 League returns  Nedbank Namibia, through its Beyond Banking Division, has extended its support of the Desert Ice Challenge T20 League by providing a N$150 000 sponsorship for the 2025 season. This is the second year running that Nedbank Namibia will be sponsoring one of the country’s most prestigious cricket leagues through a partnership with Impact Cricket Namibia. The N$150 000 sponsorship from Nedbank Namibia, through the Avo SuperShop and Paytoday platforms, will provide the league with essential resources, which will enable the organisers to host exceptional cricket events during the tournament. The director of Impact Cricket Namibia, Asad Abbas, said after realising the significant gap in the level of skills between Namibian players and other countries, they decided to come up with various strategies (one of them being the Desert Ice Challenge T20 League) that will allow players to improve their skills:  ‘While travelling to different countries, we observed that the high skill level in cricket is a result of having many players participating from various backgrounds, as well as the frequency of games and exposure they receive. For example, a player in South Africa will have played thousands of competitive cricket games against thousands of different players before making it to the national team, while a player in Namibia would have played a few hundred games against fewer than a hundred players.’  This is where Impact Cricket came up with the idea of the Desert Ice Challenge T20 League, whose aim is to develop and support the expansion of cricket as a sport of choice nationwide. Abbas said: ‘We have started a new trend for cricket in the country to enable the sport to be played continuously throughout the year, including players from across all leagues. This is one of the country’s most prestigious cricket tournaments, offering a platform for over 180 players from national, premier, and junior divisions to compete in a professionally managed and competitive environment.’  He added that Nedbank Namibia’s renewed commitment to sponsor the 2025 edition of the Desert Ice Challenge T20 League, organised by Impact Cricket Namibia, carries significant weight for both the development of cricket in Namibia and the broader goals of community upliftment. Abbas said Nedbank Namibia’s sponsorship of N$150 000 through its Avo SuperShop and Paytoday platforms, for the 2025 Desert Ice Challenge T20 League is not merely financial but is a strategic investment in grassroots sports development. The money will be used for the planning and executing of the challenge through sourcing of fields; payment of groundsmen, umpires, scorers, media crew, content creators; team branding; social media; digital media; print media coverage; live scores; livestreaming; and prize money.  Meanwhile, Cricket Namibia’s Johan Muller said that as a federation, they are proud of the work being done by the organisers of the Desert Ice Challenge:  ‘The main benefits to cricket through this initiative are that cricket is now played at the senior level and at the recreational level, and some of the juniors who integrate into this competition on an annual basis. There are no more domestic seasons; it means that players can be involved in the game for the entire year, with different competitions. What is quite nice about this competition is that it’s breaking away slightly from the traditional club setup, as it allows corporates and partners to become involved in club cricket.’  Muller added that the youth get the opportunity to play with some more senior players under their guidance, with some national players also participating in the competition:  ‘Another benefit is that this competition is not just Windhoek-based; it’s also played in Tsumeb, Gobabis and at the coast, which means that cricket is taken throughout the country. Overall, this initiative has brought quite many benefits from a cricket perspective, and even though it is not a Cricket Namibia tournament, it is great to see how it has grown over the last two years.’  Nedbank Namibia Head of Beyond Banking, Roean Kruger said that by sponsoring the 2025 Impact Cricket, Nedbank Namibia is proud to be part of the positive trajectory journey of Namibian cricket:  ‘As money experts, our commitment to the communities we serve extends far beyond traditional banking. Our sponsorship of the 2025 Desert Ice Challenge T20 League is a clear demonstration of this ‘Beyond Banking’ philosophy. We are thrilled to once again partner and support this initiative. These programs do more than just teach the technicalities of the game; they are instrumental in instilling crucial life values such as teamwork and discipline, as well as the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.’ He added that Nedbank Namibia values the power of sport to shape lives and build a stronger nation, as evidenced by its long entrenchment in the development of cricket in Namibia through supporting initiatives that nurture talent from grassroots levels to competitive stages:  ‘This continued investment in Impact Cricket underscores our dedication to fostering its growth and ensuring more young Namibians can participate and excel. By investing in Impact Cricket, we are investing in the future leaders and well-rounded citizens of Namibia, and we eagerly anticipate another year of exciting development and community engagement through this fantastic initiative.’ The post Nedbank Desert Ice Challenge T20 League returns  appeared first on The Namibian.
