If you missed my flooding talk this morning I also recorded it, because talking about these types of events is too important to keep behind a paywall.

My "more science-y less funny" talk is this morning at 9:15 CT, Room 342D in the @amshydrology.bsky.social conference. But given the 2025 flooding events, it is very relevant, and NOAA NCEI will continue to monitor and classify them post-mortem ams.confex.com/ams/106ANNUA...

River Flooding in the US for 2025
Here's daily maximum flood stages for all river gauges in the US, using data from USGS and @noaa.gov
#StateOfFlood #StateOfClimate
Areas in the US having 24 hour precipitation totals that exceeded the 1in100 (1% Annual Recurrence) threshold from 2021-2025. Note that there's no data for WA/OR.
Bottom line: these events don't happen every 100 years, they can happen each year!

2025 was (unfortunately) a big year for floods. Here at NCEI we are working on a Story Map that will highlight events through the year. More on that soon!
Until then, here's locations of flooding reports across the US in 2025, using NWS LSR's
#StateOfClimate #StateOfFlood
Areas in the lower 48 (minus OR and WA since there is no Atlas 14 data there) that had 24 hour precipitation summaries exceed both the 1in100 and 1in1000 rainfall extremes in 2025 (so far).

Preliminary data provided by @noaa.gov indicates over 250 square miles of Central Texas experienced a 1in100 year flooding event last week. Some parts of Mason County experienced a 1in1000 year event.

ICYMI, the NOAA NCEI monthly monitoring report now talks about flooding events that happened last month.
The big one of course was in Kentucky back in early April. Check it out!

Working on a monthly flood report, and the big event we are looking at is the event in Kentucky and Tennessee in early April.

Updated the notebook to highlight the current flooding in the Midwest, and to include cases where gauges are at or close to a record crest
Hits the API a lot, and colors can get wonky, but it's there for others to play with!

A reminder y'all can interact with river gauges (historical, current, and forecast) using this Jupyter notebook. There's a button at the bottom of the readme to launch in your browser... no installation required!

FOUR MONTHS OF RAIN IN FOUR DAYS!
Parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas experienced over 3-4 "April's worth" of rain in a four day period ending this morning. It is still raining in some of these parts.

Here's the status of river gauges over the flooded areas. Blue circles indicate record flooding levels, and black indicates they are within a foot of the record.

According to the @nws.noaa.gov NWPS, there are hundreds of river gauges that aren't at a flooding state now, but will be over the next few days, including parts of the Ohio River basin

One of my recent projects was to build a notebook to get current, forecast, and archive river gauge data from both the USGS and @nws.noaa.gov APIs. The notebook is live, with a My Binder link to load in your browser.

We are working on a @Esri story map to interactively visualize some of this information. More on that soon!

Pretty neat stuff! Jupyter Notebook coming soon for y'all to play with!

Preliminary estimates from NOAA data indicate nearly 2 months of rainfall fell in a two day period in Kentucky and Tennessee. Parts of these areas experienced a 1in50 year flood (2% chance it occurs each year)
#KYwx #TNwx #StateOfFlood.
4 to 5.5 "Octobers" worth of rain fell over the area in a 24 hour period.
