Miao people (aka the Hmong in many parts of Southeast Asia) are one of the most culturally vibrant and historically significant ethnic groups in Yunnan. While Guizhou has the largest population, the Miao in Yunnan have a distinct identity shaped by high-altitude living and centuries of migration. In Yunnan, the Miao are not a single monolithic group but are often categorized by their traditional attire. You’ll find them primarily in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, as well as parts of Honghe, Zhaotong, and Qujing. The Miao are renowned as "the people of silver and song." Their culture is deeply tied to their oral history, as they traditionally lacked a written language, instead "writing" their history into their embroidery.
