We had a superb #physics lecture this week by Professor Takaaki Kajita on his work on #neutrino oscillations that led to his 2015 #NobelPrize in Physics. Fascinating to hear his first-hand account of the physics of the discovery woven together with the history of the #SuperKamiokande detector.

Hidden 1,000 meters under Mount Ikeno in Japan, the Super-Kamiokande is one of the world’s most advanced neutrino detectors. It’s basically a giant tank holding 50,000 tonnes of ultra-pure water surrounded by 11,000 light sensors.

A captivating view of the interior of the Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector in Japan. Thousands of photomultiplier tubes line the walls of a massive tank of ultra-pure water, designed to detect elusive neutrinos from the sun. Scientists are investigating the mystery of the missing solar neutrinos, a long-standing puzzle in particle physics.

Very conveniently, these ALPs would induce a distinctive signal at neutrino water Cherenkov detectors, at high energy (above ~20 MeV) where the background is very small. Data from Super-Kamiokande can rule out a wide range of ALP-proton couplings for ALP masses below 80 MeV.
