Bridging Gaps Through Skills and Language The relationship between China and Namibia has long been described as friendly, reliable and rooted in strong bilateral cooperation, particularly in education and skills training. Over the years, hundreds of Namibians have benefited from Chinese scholarships, military training, and vocational programmes. One such initiative is through Nantong Vocational University in Jiangsu province, China, which has trained over 100 Namibian youths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem). This programme equips young Namibians with practical industrial skills they can apply at entry level in Namibia, contributing to a more skilled workforce and a knowledge-based economy. Nantong Vocational University is also supporting the Namibian government’s revitalisation agenda by helping establish another vocational training centre locally. This aligns with the government’s focus on mineral resource beneficiation and youth empowerment as drivers of economic development. The Chinese embassy has also affirmed its support for these efforts and Namibia’s broader goals of national prosperity and economic stability. As a professional English-Chinese translator and interpreter, I have directly witnessed the impact of such programmes. My work often involves high-level business meetings and court proceedings where simultaneous interpretation is critical. Having studied business Chinese and earned HSK Level 5 proficiency while completing my engineering degree in China, I use language as a bridge to ease communication and foster cooperation. I’ve helped resolve workplace disputes between Namibian and Chinese employees, drawing on my skills in conflict resolution and cultural sensitivity. Translating key documents has also contributed to smoother integration of Chinese businesses into our legal and regulatory framework. My work has been recognised by senior officials, and I remain committed to building on this foundation. My next goal is to return to China for advanced training and certification in interpretation by taking the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters course. I hope to become one of Namibia’s leading certified Chinese interpreters. Language, education and skills development remain powerful tools for nation-building. As we continue to strengthen ties with China, these partnerships offer real opportunities for youth empowerment and sustainable growth. – Willy Munenguni The post Bridging Gaps Through Skills and Language appeared first on The Namibian.
