The top of the figure shows an oblique photo of one of our analogue experiments at its final stage. The two plates are made of black silicone. The upper continental plate incorporates a stripe of orange softer silicone. Because of the convergence the upper continental plate has been shortened, and the photo shows that the shortening localizes in the softer silicone stripe. The subducting oceanic slab is hardly seen from this top oblique view but is displayed by the bottom view which is taken from the side of the experiment.
