A satellite image from the Terra spacecraft's MODIS instrument shows the Arctic sea ice cap on May 5th. A radial grid overlays the image, highlighting a network of dark cracks in the ice, reminiscent of the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa. The image shows a contrast between the whitish sea ice and dark open water or newly refrozen ice. Each pixel represents approximately one square kilometer.
